Since 1989, many studies on Plato mss have appearedwithnewinsightswhichprovidedmewiththeopportunitytoadapt myconclusionsinanumberofcases.Anentirelynewpartofthispublication istheinventoryoftheindirecttradition:anindexofancienttestimoniesofthe textofthesedialogues. Theresultistheoutcomeofmanyyearswork,whichIcouldnothavedone withoutthehelpofmanyothers.From1982to1986Ienjoyedthegreatpleasure topreparemydissertationinthecompanyof GerardBoterwhowasworking on the text tradition of Plato’s Republic at the time and who, now as Profes- sorGerardBoter,hascontinuouslyadvisedandsupportedmeinpreparingthis secondedition.Fromthestartin1982,professorD.M.Schenkeveldandthelate professorS.R.SlingsoftheFreeUniversityinAmsterdamstimulatedandsuper- visedtheprogressofmystudies.ProfessorDavidRuniaandthelateprofessor D.Holwerdareadmydissertationandmadehelpfulcomments.MybrotherMr GertJonkersandmyformerpupilsinancientGreekDrElskeBosandDrCaro- lienOudshoornhelpedmeintypingtheIndexTestimoniorum.MyEnglishwas corrected by Mrs M.L.
