This page intentionally left blank About the Authors Mary Gail Frawley-O'Dea, PhD, is a faculty member and super- visor at the Derner Institute for Advanced Psychological Studies at Adelphi University, Garden City, New York; the Minnesota Institute for Contemporary Psychoanalytic Studies; and the National Training Program in Contemporary Psychoanalysis in New York City. She also is on the continuing education faculty of the National Psychological Association for Psychoanalysis, Inc., in New York City. Coauthor with Jody Messier Davies of Treating the Adult Survivor of Childhood Sexual Abuse: A Psychoanalytic Perspective, Dr. Frawley-O'Dea is a clinical psychologist and psychoanalyst in clinical and supervisory practice in New City, New York. Joan E. Sarnat, PhD, is a clinical psychologist in private practice in Berkeley, California. She is Board Certified in Clinical Psychology by the American Board of Professional Psychology and is a member of the Psychoanalytic Institute of Northern California. She is on the ad- junct faculties of the California School of Professional Psychology and The Wright Institute, Berkeley, California. She has supervised and led case conferences for over 20 years, and conducts consultation groups for supervisors. VII This page intentionally left blank Acknowledgments Mary Gail Frawley-O'Dea When Joan and I met with Kitty Moore at The Guilford Press to dis- cuss with her our ideas for a book on supervision, we barely knew each other. Four years later, this situation has changed dramatically. During the process of cowriting this book with Joan, I have come to know her well, and I am filled with gratitude for her participation in this project. Over the past 4 years, I have learned to appreciate and rely on Joan's intellectual prowess, theoretical facility, clinical acuity, and fine writ- ing. In addition, her intellectual integrity—her insistence and persis- tence in ensuring that the book reach and sustain a standard of clarity, completeness, and complexity—greatly enriched the process of co- authorship for me. Beyond these professional qualities, I value deeply Joan's friendship and sense of humor. We played, we argued, and we supported each other personally and professionally. We are colleagues and we are friends, and I have grown through both of those relation- ships with Joan. Thank you, Joan. This book's gestation began for me during my supervision with Irwin Hirsch. Irwin and I have written elsewhere of our supervisory year together (Frawley-O'Dea, 1997a; Hirsch, 1997).
