PROC. BIOL. SOC. WASH. 104(4), 1991, pp. 736-741 THE STILLMAN WRIGHT COLLECTION OF COPEPODA (CRUSTACEA) FROM SOUTH AMERICA IN THE NATIONAL MUSEUM OF NATURAL HISTORY, SMITHSONIAN INSTITUTION Janet W. Reid Abstract.—The species ofCalanoida and Cyclopoida (Copepoda: Crustacea) from South America that were deposited by Stillman Wrightin the collections ofthe National Museum ofNatural History are listed. The collection includes type specimens of8 species and specimens from type localities of5 additional species ofDiaptomidae from Brazil. These deposits and others in the Kiefer Collection in Germany represent the only known surviving material from Wright's taxonomic studies ofSouth American Calanoida. Previously unpub- lished records ofseveral species from the collection are listed. During his career, the American limnol- nomenclature of South American diapto- ogist Stillman Wright described 29 species mids, Brandorff(1976) listed only Diapto- and subspecies ofcalanoid copepods ofthe mus(now Calodiaptomus) merrillaeandD. families Boeckellidae, Diaptomidae, and perelegans Wright, 1927, as possibly be- Pseudodiaptomidae.
