Angola, Cape Verde Islands, Mozambique, Sao Tome all are now independent states and are in alphabetical sequence in Part IV of this edition. The same is true of Comoro Islands and Surinam. Cambodia replaces the name Khmer Republic and the Vietnam chapter has been completely rewritten. Happenings in former Spanish Sahara occurred too late in the production schedule to alter the positioning, and the eventual outcome of the political status was in doubt at the time of going to press. However events up to that time are recorded. For 113 years the five editors of THE STATESMAN'S YEAR-BoOK have thanked their many correspondents through the world and it is nearly impossible to find variants on the phaseology to do this but the editor would assure all helpers that without their constructive and informed criticism THE STATESMAN'S YEAR-BOOK would not be found today on the shelves of nearly every library of the world. The editor would also like to remind readers that the companion volume, THE STATESMAN'S YEAR-BoOK WORLD GAZETTEER, is available. J. P.
