GOETHE PREFACE This, the 102nd issue of THE STATESMAN'S YEAR· BOOK will, the editor and his colleagues trust, show once again a careful revision of virtually every page, supplying some major amendments to the text and a large number of minor modifications and additions to the statistics. There were fifty countries as signatories of the United Nations Charter in 1945. Membership of that body now stands at 114. This one fact will help to show the amount of research necessary each· year to bring THE STATESMAN'S YEAR· BOOK up to date. It could not be achieved without the unfailing CO· operation of correspondents and friends in every part of the world. To all of them the editor extends his sincerest thanks. S. H. S.
