PREFACE
THE present volume, the 81st in the series, presents the usual
features of the YEAR-BOOK, giving the la.test available facts and figures
a.bout every country in the world. While each section has been revised,
particular attention has been devoted to the armed forces of the U.S.A. as
well as to the constituent Republics of the U.S.S.R. A sh&t account
of the British Council and one of the Middle East Supply Centre also
appear, and the map accompanying the volume shows the boundaries
of Poland at different periods of its history.
For the fifth year THE STATESMAN'S YEAR-BooK reflects conditions
in a world engaged in total war; even the few neutral countries are
suffering indirectly from the conflict. One result of the upheaval is
that certain statistical returns (e.g., trade) are still not published in
many countries. Yet on the whole a fair amount of statistical in
formation makes its appearance and it has been the Editor's endeavour
to embody this in the following pages. Many friends of the YEAR-BOOK
all over the world have helped him in the task; to one and all he
desires to express his warmest thanks for their co-operation.
