A^enophon's treatise Constitutiono f the Lacedemonians ap-

declaringq uite abruptly,t owardt he end of the treatise,t hatc on-
temporaryS parta sufferfs romv eryg rave defects.Y et in all but
the fourteentho f the fifteenc haptersh e praises contemporary
Spartaa bout as much as the Sparta of old, and he seems to speak
quite indiscriminatelyof what the Spartan legislator Lycurgus
had enacted in the remote past and of what the Spartansw ere
actuallyd oing in his time. That is to say the treatisea s a whole
hides the censure, inserted toward the end, of contemporary
Sparta. In order to hide that censures till more Xenophon uses a
stranged evice: he does not put it righta t the end, which would
be its properp lace2 but wherei t would striket he eyes,b ut sand-
wichesi t in somewherei n the last sectiono f the treatise.
But why does he hide his censure of contemporaryS parta so
ineptly?C ould he not have concealed it much more effectivelbyy
simplyo mittingi t? This of course is true; but the mere omission
would have had a greatd isadvantage:n obodyc ould then see that
Xenophon was not blind to the seriousd efectso f the Spartao f his
time; and any sensible reader who had those defectsb eforeh im
would have consideredt he author a biased fool or partisano r a
