Storms and blizzards on the east coast. Sunny and warm in California. Here in Michigan it's 43° and sunny. Nice football and shopping weather. I'll tell you, changeable weather all over. Where would you rather be? Silly question! With Christmas around the corner we all would rather be at home, regardless of the weather. I d better get down to business and silver bar news. I've just re-read our last Bugle (Nov., 1992 issue) and I think it's been the best one we've had in a long time. It's also the last one of last year, and with this issue you are now reading, it's the start of another year. I know I'm insulting everyone's intelligence by telling you all this, but I've got a point to bring out. This Bugle i_s the Start of another year and this year, 1993 is the start of another year for our club. I do want to wish the club a happy, prosperous New Year and continuous growth both in members and interest. We are off to a great start what with the prestigious ANA giving art bars and our club a five-page article plus a front cover picture, boosting our hobby to inter¬ national interest. I want to publicly thank the ANA, and especially Jean Roberts, for their fine presentation. This, in my opinion, is the greatest boost we have ever had, and we officers, trustees and members of IASAC should all strive to keep our momentum going. All of us should again bring in more members and get more active in this very interesting hobby. Remember two years ago when I issued a challenge to all of you to generate more interest and members? You responded beauti¬ fully and our club grew by leaps and bounds. Some of us brought into the fold more than 10 members alone. Well, I'll tell you, now's V r ~\ the time to do it again! One of the things I stated in the ANA article was that most people still don't know what an art bar is. This is only too true! Just by spreading the word about our club, showing silver art to our friends and family, giving gifts of silver to them, letting them read your Bugle, asking for more Bugles to give to them, these are only some of the things we can all do. Along these same thoughts, I'm asking you trustees just what are you doing for the club? The club is getting better! Are you getting better? Earn your position and title by doing, not just seeing your name in print, listing you as a trustee. Where is the round robin letter? Where are your resumes? Where is all our publicity? Slow boat to China? Last year's news is just that! This is 1993 and let's go first class all year. (Please note: my remarks are tempered by the Christmas spirit.) I'm all gung-ho for the club and expect you trustees to follow suit. Change of subject: the limited edition of 500 serial numbered, revised supplement of art bars is being sent to all who ordered them by Duane and Harvey. If you haven't ordered your copy, better do so now. Our 1993 convention site has been chosen as Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Thank you, Larry Cannon and Walter & Eda Thomas for your help¬ ful information to enable us to choose this beautiful city. Particulars and more infor¬ mation will be forthcoming in future Bugle issues. Lastly, I wish all of you a very good, healthy and vigorous 1993! THE SILVER MINE P. O. BOX 21781-SB SEATTLE, WA. 98111 January '93 DID YOU SEE WHAT I SAW? by Ken Macomber We regularly attend an antique auction known for its quality and diversity. It is well attended by a varity of local dealers. On this particular night the advance flier had listed a small coin collection as one of the lots. Upon arrival I asked Herb, the auctioneer where the collection was located. He pointed to a table stating that it wasn't much of anything. As I examined the lot I got excided. The box contained a 'few' hundred dollars worth of coins. As the auction began my heart started to pound. Attendance was only moderate this particular night with a little over 200 bid numbers issued. Lot 18 was the one I was interested in and it couldn't come soon enough. The next ten minutes felt like an eternity. The-lot started at $30.00. I thought to myself this is ridiculous. My arm shot straight up with bidder card in hand. I closed my eyes and turned my head. At 130 the bidding slowed. Time to wake up. It was down to the finale three bidders and I was still in the hunt. My bid of 150 almost held. One more raise should do it. My arm did not quiver. I got raised but my $170 bid held! Was the bid foolish or the buy of the night? Time for a break in the back of the hall to enjoy my pipe. An acquaintance approached me saying he couldn't believe the coin lot went so high. When I informed him that I was the winning bidder he carried on for two minutes, still talking to himself as he walked away. He and the othqrs had not seen what I saw, and I did not have the heart to tell him. The three large old beige pages contained a DOUBLE set of Lincoln cents, missing only the '14D and '22 plain. The key here is DOUBLE set. A set of Mercury dimes was missing the 'l6D & 21D but included a 1942/41D, problem free, F/VF worth about $250. Five sets of Roosevelt dimes accompanied the lot. The lesson is plain & simple —See what you are looking at! 9 Doug Gunter MAIL BID 2129 Lipps MAIL BID Ft.
