Dr. Constable’s exposition of 1st and 2nd Timothy offers readers more than 200 pages of insightful, verse-by-verse commentary on not only the first century meaning of Paul’s instruction to Timothy, but also its application for the church today.
In his first letter to Timothy, Paul encourages his young protégé to remain faithful to his pastoral duties—a task that many are abandoning. Paul first instructs Timothy regarding the life of the local church and then teaches about local church leadership.
In his second epistle, Paul writes to his “son in the gospel.” By the time of the letter’s writing, the Roman emperor Nero had set Rome on fire, yet blamed Christians. It was an increasingly hard time to live as a Christ-follower, so Paul urges Timothy to persevere and remain committed to the gospel in the face of such adversity.
Dr. Thomas Constable, a retired professor from Dallas Theological Seminary, crafted his extensive commentary notes over a thirty-year period. He continues to study in his retirement and updates his notes annually.
Constable’s Faith Footnotes are more detailed than notes found in a study Bible, but less technical than an academic commentary. As such, they are profitable for pastors, teachers and lay persons. Faith Footnotes provides commentary that spans all sixty-six books of the Bible and contains over 7,800 pages of notes.
Each book in the Faith Footnotes series contains a review of the historical background, a summary of the purpose and message of the book, a detailed expositional outline, as well as extensive commentary on the book’s contents.
Originally distributed to his seminary students and members of his church, Dr. Constable’s notes are also available for viewing and free download on his website (http://www.soniclight.com/constable/notes.htm).
