THE SEYCHELLES Unquiet Islands Marcus Franda profiles / Nations of Contemporary Africa HELLES ■slands Franda Consistiw|||^^^ named islands in the middle (4pi|»dian Ocean and sup¬ porting of just over 60,000, the Republic of the Seychelles is a small but increasingly important nation that has been forced to adapt to an ac¬ celerating pace of change in the 1970s and 1980s. Completely uninhabited un¬ til 200 years ago-and then only sparsely populated by ex-slaves and European adventurers - the islands sud¬ denly were opened to major outside in¬ fluences with the construction of a U.S. satellite tracking station there in the 1960s and an international airport in 1971. A massive boom in international tourism has since proceeded, as have conflicts over conservation, fishii^g rights, and oil exploration. Strategic and commercial factors have stimulated the interests of the Soviet Union, China, France, India, Tanzania, Kenya, the United States, and other nations. In this interpretive profile of the Re- ipuiblic, Dr. Frarida traces the historical background of the Seychelles from their first settlements through independence from Britain in 1976 and the tumultuous events of the late 1970s and early 1980s. Focusing on the key issues of environ¬ ment, societal and race relations, economic and strategic forces, and domestic and international politics, he attempts throughout the book to under¬ stand the turbulence and change of the past few years in the context of both development literature and Indian Ocean politics. ! s S c Library Digitized by the Internet Archive in 2018 with funding from Kahle/Austin Foundation https://archive.0rg/details/seychellesunquieOOOOfran THE SEYCHELLES PROFILES • NATIONS OF CONTEMPORARY AFRICA Larry W.
