ESWC 2009 presented the latest results in research and applicationsofSemantic Webtechnologies.Inadditionto the technicalresearch track, ESWC 2009 featured a tutorial program, a PhD symposium, a system demo track, a poster track, a number of collocated workshops, and for the first timeintheseriesaSemanticWebin-usetrackexploringthebenefitsofapplying Semantic Web technology in real-life applications and contexts. Thetechnicalresearchpapertrackreceivedover250submissions.Thereview process was organized using a two-tiered system, where each submission was reviewed by at least three members of the Program Committee. Vice Program CommitteeChairsorganizedadiscussionbetweenreviewers, collectedadditional reviewswhen necessaryand provideda metareview for eachsubmission.During a physical Program Committee meeting, the Vice Program Committee Chairs together with the Program Chairs selected 45 research papers to be presented at the conference. Inadditiontothetechnicalresearchpapertrack, thisyeararefereedSemantic Web in-use track was introduced. This track complements the more theoretical aspects of the technical research paper track by providing accounts of rigorous, principled and original work in the Semantic Web field that has a more practi- cal flavor. The Semantic Web in-use track received 27 submissions, which were thoroughly peer-reviewed by a separate Program Committee of Semantic Web researchers and practitioners from industry and academia. Eight papers were selected for publication in the ESWC 2009 proceedings, and for presentation at the conference in two in-use sessions, titled “Bringing Legacy Content to the Semantic Web” and “Linked Data.” The ESWC 2009 proceeding also include eight PhD symposium papers pre- sented at a separate track preceeding the main conference and 24 demo papers giving a brief description of the system demos that were accepted for presenta- tion in a dedicated session during the conference. ESWC 2009 had four keynote speakers. “Tonight’s Dessert: Semantic Web LayerCakes”wasgivenduringtheconferencedinnerbyJimHendler,Tetherless WorldProfessorofComputerandCognitiveScience, andtheAssistantDeanfor Information Technology, at Rennselaer. He gave his vision of the future work on the Semantic Web by looking at the layer cake evolution over time. Craig Knoblock, Senior Project Leader at the Information Sciences Institute and a Research Professor in Computer Science at the University of Southern Cali- fornia (USC), discussed work on discovering and building semantic models of Web sources. Alan Smeaton, Professor of Computing and Deputy Director of CLARITY: Centre for Sensor Web Technologies, at Dublin City University, VI Preface Ireland,discussedvideosemanticsandtheSensorWeb,inthecontextofcontent- based video retrieval. “Keys, Money and Mobile Phone” presented by Matthias Wagner, Senior Manager of the Smart and Secure Services Research Group at DOCOMO Euro-Labs, the European research laboratories of the leading Japanese mobile operator NTT DOCOMO, discussed how semantic technolo- gies can add value to mobile services. To encourage deployment of Semantic Web technologies and to gather and sharesemanticdata, inthetraditionof“eatingourowndogfood,”themetadata co-chairs this year extended the usual publication of a rich set of conference semanticmetadatawiththelaunchofanambitioussocialexperimentwherethe Semantic Web, the SocialWeb, andthe PhysicalWorldcame togetherto create a rich and integrated network of information. Special thanks go to all the members of the Program Committee of the dif- ferent refereed tracks and the additional reviewers who helped with the review processandcontributedtoensuringthe scientificqualityofESWC 2009,aswell as the members of the Organizing Committee for their hard work in selecting outstanding tutorials, workshops, panels, lightning talks, demos, posters and PhD symposium papers. We wouldlike to also thank the Sponsorship Chair for reachingouttoindustryandvariousorganizationssupportingthe2009editionof the conference, as well as the local organization, website and conference admin- istrationteamputtogetherbySTIInternationalfortheirexcellentcoordination during the conference preparation. Finally, we would like to thank the Proceedings Chair for the hard work in preparingtheseproceedings,toSpringerforthe supportwiththepreparationof the proceedingsandto the developersofthe EasyChairconferencemanagement system, whichwasusedto managethe submissionandreviewofpapers andthe production of this volume.
