! The Saying and the Said is an exhibition of photographs and poems which investigate the human voice. Being both physical and invisible, the voice is considered as a crux between our internal and external worlds and not merely a carrier of words. My large-scale, photo-based works, employing digital and hands-on processes, elicit the significance of the voice by depicting an often solitary figure negotiating issues of power and control with the environments around him. Poems relay other layers of thought and feeling, calling attention to the sound of the voice not only as a mysterious and compelling force, but also a metaphor for the human spirit.

My voice goes after what my eyes cannot reach,
With the twirl of my tongue I encompass worlds and volumes of worlds.

 The Voice as Subject
! As a child I experienced difficulty speaking. I recall being about four years old and clearly seeing in my mind something I wanted––a cup of water to quench my thirst. Yet when I asked my mother for a drink, she could not understand me. I thought I was speaking well. I even pointed to the kitchen sink to help her decipher my message. But she did not catch on. I repeated my request again and again, growing more and more anxious as I realized my communication was failing. With the stresses of her life and the fear that I might have some disorder, she became angry and yelled at me. I was overwhelmed, devastated by the thought that I could not convey a basic need, and that the person closest to me could not understand this simple request. Throughout the early part of my life I experienced several of these upsetting moments regarding my voice. While I have largely grown past them, they have made a lasting impression on my life. These experiences have stirred my curiosity towards investigating the human voice, the primary subject of this exhibition containing photographs and poems. Even the fact that I included both visual and verbal media 1 Walt Whitman, “Song of Myself” in American Literature 1865-1914, The Norton Anthology of American Literature, ed. Nina Baym (New York: W.
