I have to express my thanks to Mr. K. T. Fan of the Library of the
School of Oriental and African Studies for a good deal of help on
the everyday vocabulary and background of the text. Also to Mrs.
Y.C. Liu, lecturer in Chinese, for information on echoes of popu-
lar lore which otherwise would have escaped me. I should add that
I asked her help on a few points only, and therefore I have not
exhausted the possibilities of this stratum of meaning. However, I
hope that the reader will be able to get a reasonable impression of
the richness of a text which mingled orthodox literary styles and
allusions with oratory and recollections of popular literature with
a complete disdain for conventional models.
