THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN BURNOUT AND CHRONIC FATIGUE SYNDROME AMONG ACADEMICS AT A TERTIARY INSTITUTION by BYRON NEL SMIT A mini-dissertation submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree MAGISTER ARTIUM in RESEARCH PSYCHOLOGY in the DEPARTMENT OF PSYCHOLOGY at the UNIVERSITY OF PRETORIA FACULTY OF HUMANITIES SUPERVISOR: DR N. COETZEE CO-SUPERVISOR: PROF D. MAREE OCTOBER 2015 UNIVERSITY OF PRETORIA FACULTY OF HUMANITIES RESEARCH PROPOSAL & ETHICS COMMITTEE DECLARATION Full name : Byron Nel Smit_________________________________________________ Student Number : 26261465________________________________________________ Degree/Qualification: MA Research Psychology____________________________ Title of thesis/dissertation/mini-dissertation: The relationship between Burnout and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome among academics at a tertiary institution I declare that this thesis / dissertation / mini-dissertation is my own original work. Where secondary material is used, this has been carefully acknowledged and referenced in accordance with university requirements. I understand what plagiarism is and am aware of university policy and implications in this regard. __________ ___ ____11/02/2016_________________ SIGNATURE DATE i ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS I would like to thank all of those who contributed towards making this possible, those who were directly involved as well as those who provided support either during the writing process, or even long before. I would like to begin by thanking my supervisor, Dr Coetzee, for not only taking me on board after the challenges experienced during my first attempt at compiling a mini-dissertation, but also for the ongoing support during the process. I cannot imagine that I ever would have come to this point without your assistance, and for that I am truly and sincerely grateful. Secondly, I would like to thank my co-supervisor, Prof Maree, for stepping in at such a late and crucial stage to help this project reach its completion. You have always been willing to support people in their times of need, and this is no exception. I would like to thank Prof Demerouti, one of the developers of the OLBI, for not only giving me permission to use the instrument, but also your willingness to further engage and provide me with the necessary resources to properly carry out this study. To my family, particularly my mother, thank you for constantly pushing me to achieve more, and for supporting me over what has been a very long journey. You have done everything in your power to ensure that I could focus on what is important and not have to worry about the peripherals in life. You have never questioned the path I have taken, but only ever supported me in all the decisions I have made. Even when I thought I may know better, you have proven that you did, and might very well always know best. While my father is not able to see me complete this journey, I think he would be happy with where it has reached. This acknowledgement does not even come close to thanking both of my parents for what they gave to make this possible, knowingly and unknowingly, but it is at least a start. ii Lastly, I would like to thank my wife, Chanel, for her continuing support over the length of this journey. I know it was challenging at times to determine what it is that I needed, but you can be assured that whatever that was you gave it to me, and then some. Throughout this process you have been tolerant, patient and understanding, and also firm when I needed more of a push. Beyond all of this, however, your love for me was undoubtedly the main component which facilitated the completion of this project, and for that I am eternally grateful. iii TABLE OF CONTENTS ABSTRACT one, especially considering rapid changes in the economic and political environment. Individuals are exposed to higher levels of stress over a longer period of time, which can have serious negative implications. If the stress cannot be tolerated, an individual is at risk of developing an exhaustion-related illness such as Chronic Fatigue Syndrome or Burnout Syndrome. Both Chronic Fatigue and Burnout Syndrome are exhaustion-related phenomena which result from persistent stress. Where Chronic Fatigue Syndrome is characterised primarily as a physical illness, Burnout Syndrome is typically considered psychological. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and Burnout Syndrome, as well as the influence of other variables which include job satisfaction, social support, age and gender. Additionally, the study sought to determine the potential prevalence of chronic fatigue and burnout among the sample which was drawn. Quantitative data collection strategies were used, whereby participants completed an online survey consisting of a battery of instruments. A final sample size of 69 participants was achieved. The results show that the population is potentially at risk for both chronic fatigue and burnout, having scored relatively high on the respective scales. In regard to the relationship between Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and Burnout Syndrome, the study was not able to conclusively demonstrate a significant relationship between the two syndromes. However, there is evidence to suggest various similarities across the syndromes, particularly in regard to the physical components of exhaustion and the number of physical symptoms experienced by individuals. Future research could further explore this finding to determine the extent of that relationship, and whether it could contribute to a re- conceptualisation of exhaustion-related illnesses.
