: RECORD S^^^SCOTTISH SOCIETY. THE REGISTER OF MARRIAGES For the Parish of Edinburgh, 1701-1750- EDITED BY Rev. henry PATON. M.A. GENERAL REGISTER HOUSE, EDINBURGH. EDINBURGH PRINTED FOR THE SOCIETY BY JAMES SKINNER & COMPANY, 1908. EDINB"RGH' PRINTED BY JAMES SKINNER ANU CCMfANY ^^VO. UTAH PREFATORY NOTE. The present volume contains an alphabetical digest of the Register of Marriages of the Parish of Edinburgh for the years 1701-1750 inclusive, and is in continuation of the previous volume issued by the Society — — covering the earlier period of that Register from 1595 to 1700 the portion of the original Register now dealt with being contained in the latter part ofVolume III., the whole of Volumes IV. and V., and the first halfofVolume VI. Like the former, this volume is printed by the kind permission of Sir Stair Agnew, K.C.B., Registrar-General and Keeper of the Public Records ofScotland. Shortly before 1700 the entries in the Register begin to expand by giving in most cases not only the names of the bride and bridegroom, but also the names of their parents, with occasionally other particulars, including dates of proclamation and marriage, and payments of sums of money. It should be remembered by those consulting the following Index that only under the male entries is the full information contained in the Register given, and those consulting it under female names must refer to the corresponding entry under the bridegroom's name to obtain the details given in the Register. With respect to the dates of proclamation and marriage, sometimes the Register only gives one, in which case it is probably the date of booking for proclamation. In the entry of the female, where two dates are given, only one, that of marriage, has been inserted. In some cases a considerable discrepancy occurs between the dates of proclamation and marriage, and probably it is the latter that is at fault, as the registrar seems occasionally to have inserted wrong months and years. In or about 1738 sums of money begin to be inserted in the margin ofthe Register, sometimes in Sterling and sometimes in Scots reckoning, and which is not always apparent. The amounts vary, so that it is not easy to determine whether the amount is a booking fee or a free-will donation to the poor, or both. That a fee was uplifted may be inferred from the insertion against some entries of the word ''gratis." Sometimes also note is made of the re-delivery to parties of pledges or "pawns" con- signed in the hands of the Session-Clerk. To economise space, use has been made of the followingabbreviations — for some constantly recurring terms : s. —son ; d. -=daughter; m. — ; iv Prefatory Note. married; ser. =servant, servitor or servitrix; indw. =indweller; res. = residenter or residing; p. or par. =parish; L. =Leith; N. L. p.=North Leith parish ; S. L. p. =South Leith parish\ N. E. p. =North-East Kirk parish; N. N. K. p. =New North Kirk parish; S. K. p.=South Kirk parish ; S. E. p.=South-East Kirk parish ; S. S. E. p.=South South-East Kirk parish ; S. W. p. =South-^^'est Kirk parish ; W. K. p. =West Kirk parish. In entries where more than one church is referred to (e.g. N. K. S. K. ; N. E. ; S. S. E.), proclamation was probably made in each of them ; and where such words occur as "except S. E. Kirk," proclamation was probably made in all the other churches, with the exception of those specified. ' H. P. 1 REGISTER OF MARRIAGES OF f Citj Df (K&inburglj, III! 1701-1750.
