The previous February, I had heard the Foucault and Bataille, our intellectual relationhip has long moved late Norm Feltis, a member of OCAP, deliver a stimulating paper beyond such a hierarchical relationship. Then my work in recent which showed the key significance of OCAP for this political years has benefitted from engaging with Tara Milbrandt, Steve conjuncture . Thus political and ethical concerns, and intellectual Tombs, Bob Shenton, Brian Palmer, Andrea Beckmann, Friedrick engagements helped constitute me to be open to a transformative Sixel, JackWayne, Danica Dupont and Frances Newman. Finally my experience. Collective, creative effervescence moved me back to a sons Rory and Blake have certainly learnt the value of loving, place where I can support utopian thinking in sofa r as it helps open us agonistic relations and it is to them I dedicate this book. topossibilities that only historical chance has fo re closed and also in so fa r as it helps imagine different ways of seizing on the unfolding opportunities ofthe present and future. This provides something of a context as to why, whenI turned to writing an additional chap ter for this book, I decided to explore further Durkheim's sociology of religion but in the light of this tradition of radical Durkheimianism. Bataille and Caillois had shown how his discourse on the sacred canbe used to develop conceptions of collectivities and social organisations that showhowtheir constitution is subtended by often recurring moments of volatility, ambiguity and to the First Edition Preface In this book Iwant to look at some of the writings ofDurkheim, not to point to their shortcomings, but rather to show how his more fr uitful arguments can be developed to extend our understanding of social and political change . In the opening chapter I discuss the problem ofreading theory creatively- an important one ifwe are to learn to recognize and unravel the different discourses and chains of ..meaning that lie embedded in any piece of theoretical writing and learn to put theory to good use, rather than simply accepting or rejecting it. My main aimis to reveal and retheorize the concepts that inform Durkheim's work, andoutofthis exploration to generate and develop new and, I believe, important theoretical analyses. This rereading, indeed any rereading, is determined and informed by the concerns of the reader. My theoretical and political concerns therefore affect both the way I read and the kinds of reformulation I seeks to undertake . This is the nature of intertextuality, or what Dominick LaCapra has called the transferential relationship : the conscious and, at times, unconscious dialogue between a writer and a reader, where the reader finds his own symp toms in the text alongside the manifest concerns of the writer, and seeks answers to his own questions, which may be different from those posed by the writer. Writer and reader leave their marks , or traces, on one another, and this process is reproduced when the reader commits his thought to writing, thus opening the way for greater textual richness and with other readers. dialogue Why should we return to Durkheim's work yet again? First because, contrary to the almost universal consensus amongst sociolo\302\255 gists, in Durkheim's texts neither the dominant discourses nor those present only as partially suppressed fragments can be construed as inherently conservative or'positivistic . His oeuvre is complex, multi\302\255 faceted, often characterized by a ruthlessly anti-Utopian logic and with an extraordinary potential fruitfulness. Then, to put it simply, it is because as a committed socialist and social scientist I believe that whilst Marxism is the most fruitful of all socialist and sociological discourses it needs the aid ofDurkheim's concepts to rid itself ofboth XXI x:lfii ThRea drafiD urkheim Prtfota hcFeei rEsdti tion XXlll itUst opiaanniidtas snm thropoMcaernxtircsilmsai'mitss.mh iahtta s betwceaepni atna.sdl oicsistao lciistetht eiareraesel , cs oon tin-uities thnee cestsoaotrloays n altyhnseae t aunrbdea soefcs l assosc iteot iesi,n r elatitootn hsefhiiorpr o mfos r daenrtd h eliirk seolruyc eosf specfiefya sailbtleern naotni-veex plsooictoiaratdlie avrnesdt o disoTrhdicesor u.hl edls po ciparloidslutecmsseo s r alcirsittioicfq ues identthaiegfy e anntmdse chanbiyws hmistc hhe wriebl elm o vement capitaanlddie svmem loorpre e alhiesntmcioecd ,eb suattl rseoa liz fromo nceo t hoet hTehrec. o ntempcorrioasfMri aysr xisshmo ws ablpeo,l iptriocgarla Tmhmieissn .te rrdoigaaltboiegvtueew ae en howp robletmhaectslieaca i rmHeso. w evtehcrir,si h sanisos at os,n ly reconsDtuirtkuhteeiadmn aids s lmi mdmoewdMn a rxiwshmi,ic sh tomoa nsye sltfy 'lpeods t-Msaeretxmoii smtasg'is nieg,nt ihfei ed summariintz hecedo nclcuhdaipnhtgae tsrh,,e b no,ta th h eoretical exhauosfMt airoxni bsurmta, t phreorv tihdteea das nkod p portunitaynp dr acitmipcoaRrlet a.d ing/rtehreeoiansrde yiv aned gri sinter ofr uthlpersusnMliaynr gx iosfi mte sr raonridsn cohearneodnf c es estaecadtn idmt a yt herebfel oirmeib tyte hdde e signoafot niloyn inhibiitotsvi enrge xtTehnasntiktoos hnc e.r itthiceaolrw eotriokcf a l certparionb laeswm osr tohfey x ploryaetfotir ao lntl;h aittc an Althuasnosdte hrie ntr hsse t ructtruardatilhtieisirnotsen o wam uch produunceeex cptceodn clu-stihoceno sn cluosfti howinossr k slimdmoewdvn e rsoiMfoa nr xiwsimt,wh hiinsc ohm kee cyo nceptsw,e roen liynp aarntt ic-ipaanttdhe pidrs o vbiodteshso moefi ts sucahst hree laotfpi ronosd uchtaivboeen er,ne taainnodet dh ers,e xciteamnedbn, yst u ggetshtiaiittnns go mte realr ya tionalizing sucahis d eoy,lh oagvbee edni spdl.Ia ntc heniesws ysotfec mo nceptsa ctisvoimwteay r roafin tatsu thenticity. inevitthaebarlreyJe a cuwnhaiec,ch ao nn lbyer emedbiyae d Thibso ohka gsr oowunot fm orteh atnw enyteyas rtsr'u wgigtlhe selebcotrirvoefrw oimnk gi ndtrreadd istuicaohsan r se theorizseodc ioltohgeioacnrpadyal r ticwuitlthahw reol ryok fMs a rWxe,b er DurkheiTmobi ems om.ra ec ctuefrr,ua ittfhuelco arbnyed evelopeda nDdu rkheNieme.d tloes saIsyh avree aadnr de rtehaedmi arj or bya t ransfaenrcdeo nutnitaelr trraenlsafteibroeentnswthteiiheapenl texmtasn tyi maensdi ,fs u crhe reahdaivbneeg esdn i ffeirites n t, slimdmoewdvn e rsoifboonttshr aditions. becaIhu asveae lb seoei nn voilntv reydti oun ngd erasntedav nadl uate Theg oaolft hbioso tkh,e insb,o tthoe ngaignae ni mmanent othmeorr ceo ntempsocrhaooroftyl h so uMgyho tw.np references critoifDq uurek heoiemua'vnsrtd eh etnh roaud giha lwoigtuahe arree latcilvebeaulritsy,t e etmoms e a xiomtahtnaiotoc n teh eoreti non-humMaanrixsittsoirmc e, t daeivne,al nomdpo dicfye rtoafh iins cadli scomuornsoep oklniozwelsea ndedgq eu atlhlaaynt sy e rious concaelpitzuaTthiirosen cso.n sDtuirtkuhteeiwdmi iilnsltm u rbne schoooftl h ouaglhwtap yrso duscoemvsea luianbslieIg a hltsso. usetdoc ritcieqrutaeas iponef cM atrsx iTshmee.a rclhya pitnevrosl ve belitehviaietto s n liyof n iers i goirneo xuesg aenscdir si ttihcaits m as omewshtartu catnurrdea aliliniststet r roofDgu artkihoewnio mr'ks onter esautcsshc howoiltrshe spIew cotuu.ldn dertlhnieen eetd o follboywa re edc onsotfic teurtotifaho iicnnso ncaenpadtr se formuresptehcietn tebgroitothfoy t htehre oarsip setospt lhee mselves latoifoh nia sr gumeSnitnascm .ea jcoorn coefrt nhb eo oikst o strugwgiltdihin fgfi pcruolbtla enmodsf t hdei scotuhratsthe esy devealm oopra ed eqpuiactteou ftr hepe a ramweittehwrihsni cah prodiunct ehc eo urosfte h awtor Ikh .o pIeh avseu cceiend ed feiabssloec sioaclciioesuttoly pd e rtahteiercs,eo ntirneufaelrt eotn hcee relattoti hwneog r okfD urkh(eaionmtd h eirnts hs)ap ti !rfhilat v.ie t maneisfatn lda tseoncti ealleimseotnf Dt usr khetihmo'usgI hnt . iisln a rpgaedr utte ot hhee olfpan umboefpr e oopvleemra nyye ars.
