This academic project, known as “The Qur’an Seminar,” was led by Gabriel Said Reynolds with the purpose of advancing scholarly understanding of the Qur’anic text. As the participants of the seminar were encouraged to address the Qur’an directly, this volume is the result of an endeavor to provide a much-needed tool to approach the text of the Qur’an on its own terms. My first gratitude goes to Gabriel Reynolds, my friend and colleague, at the Department of Theology, for his advice and encouragement, which helped bring this work to completion. I would also like to extend my gratitude to all participants in the Qur’an Seminar, particularly, Mehdi Azaiez, Tommaso Tesei, and Hamza Zafer, whose generous help has shaped the scope of this project. Mr. Talal Itani has been very supportive as he allowed me to use his Qur’an translation for this volume. Shukran kathīran! Preparing this volume has been a long journey, almost ten years in the making. I couldn’t have done it without support all along the way. I have been fortunate to be surrounded by a supportive community at the University of Notre Dame, both faculty and students. The theology faculty, especially the World Religions and World Church (WRWC) area, provided the amiable congeniality and intellectual space for me to work on this project. I should note my thanks to colleagues in the WRWC area as a token of my appreciation: Emmanuel Katongole, Paul Kollman, CSC, David Lantigua, Bradley Malkovsky, Francesca Murphy, Paulinus Odozor, CSC, R. Trent Pomplun, Gabriel Reynolds, and Todd Whitmore. They are not only great scholars, but also nice indi- viduals. I am also grateful to my ustādh, Rashied Omar from the Kroc Institute, for his continuous support. The students in my “Qur’anic Exegesis” course likewise deserve a special thanks. One of the strongest motivators many of us have for writing books comes from teaching. Teaching Qur’anic exegesis and other Qur’an-related courses has convinced me of the deep need for a Qur’an with cross-references. I must single out Jacob Kildoo for helping me with various tasks as I worked on the Introduction. I am indebted to my friends and family – without their help and emotional support this project would not have been possible. One unparalleled friend must be thanked for his unique contributions: Sukidi not only continuously encouraged me to finish this book (there were moments of low spirits due to the long process), but also offered insightful comments on my Introduction. Above and beyond the academic endeavor, I would like to express my special thanks to my wife, Nunung Nurhasanah, for her love, quiet encouragement, and patience. I have sometimes been too much preoccupied with this project. I dedicate this work to the beautiful souls of my dad, Achmad Sirry, and my mom, Samsumi. “O tranquil soul. Return to your Lord, pleased and accepted” (Q 89:27–28). https://doi.org/10.1515/9783110782448-001 Table of Contents Acknowledgments   V An Introduction to The Qur’an with Cross-References   1 User’s Guides   35 Sūrah 1–114 Sūrah 1: Al-Fātiḥah (The Opening)   39 Sūrah 2: Al-Baqarah (The Cow)   39 Sūrah 3: Āli ‘Imrān (The Family of Amran)   80 Sūrah 4: Al-Nisā’ (Women)   105 Sūrah 5: Al-Mā’idah (The Table)   130 Sūrah 6: Al-An‘ām (Livestock)   148 Sūrah 7: Al-A‘rāf (The Elevation)   169 Sūrah 8: Al-Anfāl (The Spoils)   194 Sūrah 9: Al-Tawbah (Repentance)   203 Sūrah 10: Yūnus (Jonah)   221 Sūrah 11: Hūd (Hūd)   234 Sūrah 12: Yūsuf (Joseph)   248 Sūrah 13: Al-Ra‘d (Thunder)   260 Sūrah 14: Ibrāhīm (Abraham)   266 Sūrah 15: Al-Ḥijr (The Rock)   272 Sūrah 16: Al-Naḥl (The Bee)   280 Sūrah 17: Al-Isrā’ (The Night Journey)   294 Sūrah 18: Al-Kahf (The Cave)   306 Sūrah 19: Maryam (Mary)   318 Sūrah 20: Ṭā-Hā (Ṭā-Hā)   326 Sūrah 21: Al-Anbiyā’ (The Prophets)   338 Sūrah 22: Al-Ḥajj (The Pilgrimage)   349 Sūrah 23: Al-Mu’minūn (The Believers)   358 Sūrah 24: Al-Nūr (The Light)   368 Sūrah 25: Al-Furqān (The Criterion)   377 Sūrah 26: Al-Shu‘arā’ (The Poets)   385 Sūrah 27: Al-Naml (The Ant)   401 Sūrah 28: Al-Qaṣaṣ (The Stories)   410 Sūrah 29: Al-‘Ankabūt (The Spider)   420 Sūrah 30: Al-Rūm (The Romans)   428 Sūrah 31: Luqmān (Luqman)   435 Sūrah 32: Al-Sajdah (Prostration)   439 Sūrah 33: Al-Aḥzāb (The Confiderates)   442 VIII   Table of Contents Sūrah 34: Saba’ (Sheba)   451 Sūrah 35: Fāṭir (Originator)   458 Sūrah 36: Yā-Sīn (Yā-Sīn)   463 Sūrah 37: Al-Ṣaffāt (The Aligners)   470 Sūrah 38: Ṣād (Ṣāḍ)   482 Sūrah 39: Al-Zumar (Throngs)   489 Sūrah 40: Ghāfir (Forgiver)   498 Sūrah 41: Fuṣṣilat (Detailed)   507 Sūrah 42: Al-Shūrā (Consultation)   513 Sūrah 43: Al-Zukhruf (Decorations)   520 Sūrah 44: Al-Dukhān (Smoke)   528 Sūrah 45: Al-Jāthiyah (Kneeling)   532 Sūrah 46: Al-Aḥqāf (The Dunes)   536 Sūrah 47: Muḥammad (Muhammad)   541 Sūrah 48: Al-Faṭḥ (Victory)   545 Sūrah 49: Al-Hujurāt (The Chambers)   549 Sūrah 50: Qāf (Qāf)   552 Sūrah 51: Al-Dhāriyāt (The Spreaders)   555 Sūrah 52: Al-Ṭūr (The Mount)   559 Sūrah 53: Al-Najm (The Star)   563 Sūrah 54: Al-Qamar (The Moon)   568 Sūrah 55: Al-Raḥmān (The Compassionate)   572 Sūrah 56: Al-Wāqi‘ah (The Inevitable)   577 Sūrah 57: Al-Ḥadīd (Iron)   583 Sūrah 58: Al-Mujādilah (The Argument)   588 Sūrah 59: Al-Ḥashr (The Mobilization)   591 Sūrah 60: Al-Mumtaḥanah (The Woman Tested)   595 Sūrah 61: Al-Ṣāf (Column)   597 Sūrah 62: Al-Jumu‘ah (Friday)   599 Sūrah 63: Al-Munāfiqūn (The Hypocrites)   600 Sūrah 64: Al-Taghābun (Gathering)   602 Sūrah 65: Al-Ṭalāq (Divorce)   604 Sūrah 66: Al-Taḥrīm (Prohibition)   606 Sūrah 67: Al-Mulk (Sovereignty)   608 Sūrah 68: Al-Qalam (The Pen)   611 Sūrah 69: Al-Ḥāqqah (Reality)   614 Sūrah 70: Al-Ma‘ārij (Ways of Ascent)   618 Sūrah 71: Nūḥ (Noah)   621 Sūrah 72: Al-Jinn (The Jinn)   623 Sūrah 73: Al-Muzammil (The Enwrapped)   626 Sūrah 74: Al-Muddaththir (The Enrobed)   628 Sūrah 75: Al-Qiyāmah (Resurrection)   632 Table of Contents   IX Sūrah 76: Al-Insān (Man)   634 Sūrah 77: Al-Mursalāt (Unleased)   637 Sūrah 78: Al-Naba’ (The Event)   640 Sūrah 79: Al-Nāzi‘āt (The Snatchers)   643 Sūrah 80: ‘Abasa (He Frowned)   646 Sūrah 81: Al-Takwīr (The Rolling)   649 Sūrah 82: Al-Infiṭār (The Shattering)   651 Sūrah 83: Al-Muṭaffifīn (The Defrauders)   652 Sūrah 84: Al-Inshiqāq (The Rupture)   655 Sūrah 85: Al-Burūj (The Constellation)   656 Sūrah 86: Al-Ṭāriq (The Night Visitor)   658 Sūrah 87: Al-A‘lā (The Most High)   659 Sūrah 88: Al-Ghāshiyah (The Overwhelming)   661 Sūrah 89: Al-Fajr (The Dawn)   662 Sūrah 90: Al-Balad (The Land)   665 Sūrah 91: Al-Shams (The Sun)   666 Sūrah 92: Al-Layl (The Night)   667 Sūrah 93: Al-Duḥā (Morning Light)   669 Sūrah 94: AL-Sharḥ (The Soothing)   670 Sūrah 95: Al-Tīn (The Fig)   670 Sūrah 96: Al-‘Alaq (Clot)   671 Sūrah 97: Al-Qadr (Degree)   672 Sūrah 98: Al-Bayyinah (Clear Evidence)   673 Sūrah 99: Al-Zalzalah (The Quake)   674 Sūrah 100: Al-‘Ādiyāt (The Racers)   674 Sūrah 101: Al-Qāri‘ah (The Shocker)   675 Sūrah 102: Al-Takāthur (Abundance)   676 Sūrah 103: Al-‘Aṣr (Time)   677 Sūrah 104: Al-Humazah (The Backbiter)   677 Sūrah 105: Al-Fīl (The Elephant)   678 Sūrah 106: Quraysh (Quraysh)   678 Sūrah 107: Al-Mā‘ūn (Assistance)   679 Sūrah 108: Al-Kawthar (Plenty)   680 Sūrah 109: Al-Kāfirūn (The Disbelievers)   680 Sūrah 110: Al-Naṣr (Victory)   681 Sūrah 111: Al-Masad (Thorns)   681 Sūrah 112: Al-Ikhlāṣ (Monotheism)   682 Sūrah 113: Al-Falaq (Daybreak)   682 Sūrah 114: Al-Nās (Mankind)   683
