PREFACE
At the end of the academic year 1975/76
Professor Sture Lagercrantz will retire as Professor Regius
et Ordinarius of General and Comparative Ethnography in the
University of Uppsala, where he has taught for more than
thirty years. Most of his own work and that of his many
students has been concerned with African problems. Being a
former student of his, it is important for me personally to
express my own gratitude to Dr. Lagercrantz for many years of
interesting co-operation. It is also appropriate that the
Scandinavian Institute of African Studies at Uppsala pays
homage to Dr. Lagercrantz' work by publishing (albeit in a
much more modest form than his own magnificent series
studie Ethnographica Upsaliensia!) a small bibliography of his
work.
The Institute has been allowed to draw on Dr. Lagercrantz'
impressive knowledge of things African since its foundation
in 1962. More important, however, is the fact that he has
created a milieu of research and teaching on African problems
and African culture in the University of Uppsala, which
incidentally was one of the reasons for setting up this
Institute in Uppsala. We are grateful for his support and his
continuing
interest~
