There is now overwhelming evidence that the early detection and treatment of psychotic disorders are critical for optimizing prognosis. Yet, to date, there have been relatively few reference sources to assist pro- fessionals, friends, and families in navigating the road to diagnosis and early intervention. Moreover, among the books that are available, none is devoted to offering guidance primarily to those who are not in the fi eld of mental health, yet are in a position to assist youth who are experiencing an initial episode of psychosis. There is no doubt that it is uniquely challeng- ing to be confronted with the task of supporting and encouraging patients who are experiencing psychotic symptoms for the fi rst time in their lives. In this volume, Drs. Carina A. Iati and Rachel N. Waford offer expert and compassionate advice on recognizing the fi rst signs of psychosis, as well as the strategies that professionals and friends and families can use to enhance the patient’s entry into the treatment system. They offer solu- tions to the problems that are likely to emerge at each of the critical stages: engagement, intervention, and follow-up. The authors provide a thor- ough road map that addresses the characteristic features of these stages and the unique challenges that patients are likely to encounter in the jour- ney to treatment and recovery. The authors’ knowledge of our current sci- entifi c understanding of psychotic disorders, coupled with their clinical experience and sensitivity, makes this an extremely useful resource. As the authors clearly document, there are unfortunate but signif- icant differences between psychiatric and other medical disorders with respect to how their detection and treatment are conceptualized. Although there have been major advances in public education about mental health, social stigma and bias against those with psychiatric disorders remain. In fact, stigma is often the fi rst barrier that individuals confront when they experience the onset of an initial psychotic episode.
