KARUSH, M.D. Clinical material from the analyses of young children may be particu- larly useful in understanding the vicissitudes of the aggressive drive. In this paper, the psychoanalytic work with Teddy, a boy with aggres- sive and angry behavior, is presented to illustrate several important, intertwining and determining factors involved in the expression of his aggressive drive. These include traumatic events, his relationship with his parents and his dread of the strength of his instincts. When the child’s experience includes the lack of external control of his impulses, he may be more predisposed to violent behavior. The importance of the stage of ego development at the time of trauma is also emphasized. teddy, an angelic-looking child, was first brought to my of- fice at the age of 2 years and 7 months because of his “angry, abusive behavior toward friends and adults.” The director of his nursery school had suggested the consultation because she was alarmed by his “aggressive fantasies.” He would tell his teacher that he was going to kill her, and he would threaten to throw his classmates out the win- dow. According to his mother, he didn’t like being told what to do and would counter demands with such retorts as, “You’re stupid. I don’t like you.” Teddy was a slight, fragile-looking, blond, blue-eyed Associate Dean of Education for Child Analysis; Training Analyst; Adult, Child and Adolescent Supervising Analyst at the New York Psychoanalytic Institute.
