Some feel we will never make it completely paperless, while others are more optimis- tic. Either way, we continue to be in an invasion of information technology in the healthcare industry. The different vendors are positioning themselves by offering more and more modules with a specific niche or purchasing other smaller com- panies to offer these products. Implementing an electronic health record (EHR) is only the beginning; there are unique needs in almost every department that will offer the question to make what we have fit or obtain another system to meet this need. Some feel that this is a never-ending cycle since the influx of cyber- security worries makes it even more important to continuously upgrade the systems you already have, while being asked to implement more. With all of this comes the need for project management and the understanding of what it takes to implement quality software that is secure and usable. Some software projects are large multiyear efforts to bring a full EHR to an organiza- tion, while others are the smaller niche systems for a few users. Some will be purchased from a company that developed the software for sale, while others will be built just for a single unique need. It is important for project managers to have a toolkit where they can draw upon tools and concepts for each project they manage. Since each project is unique, the necessary tools will vary from one to the other. One primary tool every project manager should have is A Guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK) by the Project Management Institute. As project managers move through each project, they will gather more tools to add to their toolbox to be used in future projects. This book provides essen- tial concepts for any project manager who will be leading a project to implement healthcare information technology. The early chapters will provide a review for experienced project managers as well as an introduction for those new to the industry. The later chapters introduce concepts and define terms used for soft- ware implementation projects that will add more tools for use in healthcare infor- mation technology projects. A project manager is rarely an expert in the design, development, testing, training, or technical implementation of software, and this should not be the expectation. This book provides an overview of software and hardware concepts ix
