Headings to the chapters, in English, have been introduced, Mhich, it is hoped, \Aill form a \aluable aid to the Student. A copious Vocabulary follows the Text, which will render a Hindi Dictionary unnecessary, and contains many words not to be found in the best Hindi Dictionary which has yet appeared that by Mr. Thompson. It is also to be noted, that the punctuation of the Text has been greatly altered, and tliat marks of interrogation and exclamation have been introduced where necessary. It will Ije found, it is hoped, that typographical errors are, in a great measure, excluded; l)ut. when it is considered that in the later editions, such as tliat of 1831, more than twelve hundred such errors exist, tlie Eeader will, perhaps, pardon the mistakes that nuxy meet his eye in the pivsent pages. When it is remembered tliat Hindi is the language ol' the laigest part of India, bemg, in its \arious dialects, spoken by all the rustic and agricidtural population throughout Bihar, Oude, Nepal, Bandalkand, a considerable portion of Rajputand, Sind, and the Panjab, it will not be thought that the importance of studying it can be exaggerated, The Bengal Government have, consequently, du-ected that all Civilians, proceeding to the N.AV. Provinces, shall pass an examination in Hindi; and the like qualification is still more universally required of Military Officers. This being the case, an improved edition of the Prcm S(h/(ir was imperatively called for, as this book is, in Hindi, what the Bdgh o Bolidr is in Urdu, and has. consequently, been fixed upon as tlie Test in the Examinations, both Civil and Military. It is hoped that this desideratum, under the lil)eral patronage of the Honourable Court of Directors, has now been supplied. PREM SAaAR. THE OCEAN OF LOVE.
