THE PRACTICE OF PASTORAL CARE IN EMPOWERING UNMARRIED CHRISTIAN YOUNG ADULTS: A QUALITATIVE POSTCOLONIAL AND INTERDEPENDENT APPROACH A Practical Research Project presented to the Faculty of Claremont School of Theology In Partial Fulfillment Of the Requirement for the Degree Doctor of Ministry by Eunsung Jeon May 2022 Copyright © 2022 by Eunsung Jeon This Practical Research Project completed by Eunsung Jeon has been presented to and accepted by the faculty of Claremont School of Theology in partial fulfillment of the requirements of the Doctor of Ministry Faculty Committee Namjoong Kim, Chairperson HyeRan Kim-Cragg Dean of the Faculty Andrew Dreitcer May 2022 ABSTRACT THE PRACTICE OF PASTORAL CARE IN EMPOWERING UNMARRIED CHRISTIAN YOUNG ADULTS: A QUALITATIVE POSTCOLONIAL AND INTERDEPENDENT APPROACH by Eunsung Jeon Currently, the average marriage age in Korean society is rising, and more people live unmarried. In these times, members of the Church critically reflect on the view of unmarried young adults in the Church and call for new changes as a result. The Church of Korea offers a complementary alternative, reflecting on the growing reality of unmarried young adults and the conflicts and oppressive situations arising from existing perceptions of traditional marriage. This project was conducted in-depth through Phenomenological qualitative research on unmarried young adults in their 30s and above who live their faith in the Y Church. There were four categories of their experience: lack of respect, standardization, oppression, and lack of communication channels, and they were interpreted as post-colonial and interdependent, and emphasized why interdependent pastoral care was needed. I suggested a practical alternative through interdependent Bible reading and sermons for the church to interdependently care for unmarried young people over 30. In 1990, the average age of marriage in Korea was 27.79 for men and 24.79 for women, but in 2020 the average age of marriage in Korean society was 33.23 years for men and 30.78 for women, an increase by more than five years. In businesses and broadcasts, there are a growing number of products and programs aimed at unmarried young adults. In this reality, I wondered how the Korean Church was preparing pastoral arrangements for a growing number of unmarried young adults. While I was concerned about these issues, I had the opportunity to take classes on Postcolonialism and Interdependence from Dr. Namsoon Kang and Dr. HyeRan Kim-Cragg as part of my doctoral program in pastoral studies at the Claremont School of Theology. In taking the courses, I became aware of many colonial perspectives within the church. Then, what are the experiences that unmarried young adults in their 30s have in the church? I selected eight unmarried young adults in their 30s and older from the Y Church in Yeongdeungpo, Seoul, for an in-depth interview. They were qualitatively studied using phenomenological research methods to find out what they had experienced in the Church. In the study, I listened to deepen the in-depth knowledge, using Colaizzi’s methods to derive meaningful topics. Four categories and nine subject groups were able to be drawn into twenty- seven topics. They were in the categories of lack of respect, standardization, oppression, and lack of communication channels. Unmarried young adults in their 30s or older have different values, ideas, and plans for marriage, but they find that these ideas are not respected. I found that young people with these i diverse ideas are being standardized as objects that should be married quickly in the church. Unmarried young people were neglected for their diversity and were standardized as subjects who had to get married quickly. This was related to the normalization that it was normal to get married and it was abnormal to not to get married. It was found that the Korean church standardizes unmarried young people in their 30s and older as normal and abnormal due to the prevailing post-colonial view that emphasizes the Christian tradition of family. These normative young adults were being oppressed from a colonial point of view. Through marginalization, they discovered that they were marginalized, unable to be the main target of pastoral care in the church, and unable to actively participate in the decision-making of the church. Unmarried young adults in their 30s and older showed a sense of helplessness when people asked when they would get married despite refusing to respond to people’s persistent questions, and even they began to comply with it. Moreover, they were neglected, as they were not married and experiencing violence when people called them informal. They were subjected to violence of being talked down to, and they were denigrated by people for being unmarried. In addition, they were experiencing difficulties in participating in the church’s decision-making structure and lack of communication channels. Postcolonialism and interdependence were discussed in this study in order to interpret the results of these issues from a postcolonial perspective and propose an alternative perspective with interdependence. The theory of postcolonialism is to discover internalized colonial thoughts and interdependence refers to the way in which everyone is related to another. With these theories, I examined experiences of oppression and standardization experienced by unmarried young adults in their 30s and older in the church from a postcolonial perspective and explored alternative approaches to interdependence. ii As an alternative to interdependence, I suggested that unmarried young adults read the Bible in an interdependent way. I suggested it in the hope that the unmarried young adults would experience healing and recovery as they overcome their standardized thoughts and prejudices by reading the bible from an interdependent perspective. Moreover, I offered an opportunity for healing and recovery by writing a sermon manuscript based on the Bible readings from an interdependent perspective and preaching it during the worship service. My hope is that this study will be helpful for ministers who serve unmarried young adults in their 30s and older, and for congregations not to standardize young adults into marriage, but rather to encourage them toward interdependence. ii i
