Because the theme of that book is somewhat carried over into this book, we recommend that you first become familiar with The Stronghold of God before pro- ceeding. v Introduction AWOMANFROM another state who had been active in witchcraft gave her life to the Lord, moved to Iowa, and began attending our church. During my initial conversation with her, she told me something remark- able. She said, “You know, when I was into witchcraft, every satanist I knew was daily trying to curse you.” She mentioned that a list of ten Christian leaders had been distributed to satanic covens throughout North America for the purpose of putting curses on those leaders. Because of my work in spiritual warfare and because the Lord was using this ministry vii THE POWER OF COVENANT PRAYER to unite Christians in prayer for their cities, I was included on that list. After our conversation, I called a man who had been nationally known as a leader in the occult but had recently come to Christ. I asked him if it was true that satanists were seeking to put curses upon my life. He said it was true, mentioning that before he be- came a Christian, he himself participated in the practice. My first response was a mix- ture of laughter and amazement. “It is astonishing to me that thousands, per- haps tens of thousands, of satanists are daily cursing me, while I am aware only of the in- creasing blessings on my life,” I said. I wanted to quote Elijah, “Perhaps their god is sleeping or away on a journey.” (See 1 Kings 18:27.) But before I could say another word, he interrupted me and said, “These satanists have tremendous powers. Don’t belittle what they can do. It is only because you walk close to the Lord that their curses can’t reach you.” “Walking close to the Lord” is the theme of this book; it also provides us with the power of covenant prayer, the weapon we use to combat not only satanic curses, but all of life’s ills. I know that because I en- deavor to walk near to Jesus, He has sheltered me from the curse of the enemy. I am not assuming an invulnerability to viii Introduction satanic attacks, for that would be pre- sumption, not immunity. I know that I have areas in my heart that could leave me exposed to the enemy. As such, I know that my best defense against the devil is to maintain a humble heart before the Lord. While I am aware that every virtue in my life is still growing, I also am aware that God has given me a special grace—preparing my heart for spiritual warfare. I know the blessing of the Lord has hedged my soul from the enemy; God’s goodness has be- come a haven for my family, my church, and—to a certain degree—my city. Additionally, even when the enemy was granted permission to sift my life, God used those times to train my hands for war. In- deed, in the very areas where Satan sought to destroy me, God has now anointed me to teach others how to overcome. The Father has faithfully led me in His triumph in Christ. My boast is in the Lord, for the power of God’s blessing is immeasurably stronger than the assault of Satan’s curses. The Lord has faithfully given me His divine antidote to cancel the effects of the enemy. In the midst of great conflicts, the Lord has contin- ually brought my soul into His stronghold. He has impressed upon my heart to teach others also. —Francis Frangipane ix
