The papers were then revised for publication during 1981. Other papers, presented at the conference but not published in this volume, were read by David Butler on 'Labour and Europe', Patrick Seyd on 'Labour and the left in the 1970s', David Lipsey on 'Labour's left and right' and Bernard Crick on 'Labour and the intellectuals'. A small grant from the SSRC helped to meet the costs of organising the conference. Like many other students of politics I am happy to acknowledge the generous support of the Council and the hospitality provided by Nuffield College. This book is dedicated to the memory of Robert McKenzie, Professor of Political Sociology at the London School of Economics. He was both famous and admired as a student of British political parties and as a television broadcaster. Bob had been a lively and disputatious participant in our conference. His sudden death in October 1981 came as a great shock to his fellow-contributors. Bob faced many demands on his time and the editor had to cajole him to submit his manuscript on time. I am proud that I pursued him and delighted to carry his last published word on the Labour Party. Dennis Kavanagh
