Averell Harriman family, the annual Harriman Lectures have become an important intellectual event and celebration in the academic calendar of the Institute and Columbia University. Previous Harriman Lectures have been delivered by the noted American social scientist Barrington Moore, the Russian academician and cultural historian Dmitri Likhachev, the late British economist Alec Nove, and the late British social theorist Ernest Gellner. In  the lectures were increased from one to three, and a program of publication commenced with Columbia University Press.
