Not a Survivor’s Guide Iwonderedabouthowtotackleabookaboutmymanicdepression for some time. In January 1998 I saw how and this is the result. SometimeswhenIwroteIwasabitdown, sometimesIwashigh and sometimes I was even higher up than that and so different versionsofmehavecontributedtothisbook.Thewriting, therefore, reflectsthis, containingdifferentshadesandmoods, nottomention the contradictions. But that is all right for it is illustrative of the illness itself and whilst I believe that the little factual information I give on the illness is accurate, this book is not a survivor’s guide or anythingofthesort.ItisjustatourofmanicdepressionwhichIhope will communicate something of the character of the illness to non-sufferers and strike some chords with my fellow manic- depressives. It is also written for my family and friends who until theyreadthefirstdraftwereonlyabletoseetheeffectsoftheillness. I also wrote the book for myself. Mythankstothefollowingfortheirencouragementandhelpin the production of this book: Fiona Moncrieff, Kelvin Paisley, Christine and John Ritchie, Carole Sands, Dr Douglas Fowlie, Bob Watson,MikeHarley,MarionNewton,AlasdairMacroneandHilary Winter.
