E1FLAST.indd vi 7/30/10 4:15:14 PM Introduction We lift ourselves by our thought, we climb upon our vision of ourselves. If you want to enlarge your life, you must fi rst enlarge your thought of it and of yourself. Hold the ideal of yourself as you long to be, always, everywhere—your ideal of what you long to attain—the ideal of health, effi ciency, success. —Orison Swett Marden D estiny frequently has better plans for us than we might have ever considered. We may be so wrapped up in planning our own future that we may not appreciate the opportunities that lie before us. Perhaps that is because sometimes these opportunities are shrouded in pain and masked in hardship. Instead we may myopically see the crumbling plans and dashed dreams that we once held dear, potentially missing the calling or opportunity that awaits us. I know this firsthand. It is how I came to call natural medicine, holistic nutrition, and the healing arts my profession and passion . . . and my destiny. In my late teens, I was diagnosed with a rare, incurable genetic disease. Little was (and still is) known about the condition, and few treatment options exist or existed. But despite my health problems, I was determined to live out what I clearly perceived as my destiny: a career as an international journalist, stationed in war-torn nations, relaying the stories of people worldwide. But destiny had other plans for me. E1CINTRO.indd 1 7/30/10 4:08:11 PM INTRODUCTION Partway through journalism school, a physician who was moni toring my health decided to change my treatment plan and switched my medication; a decision that would have dire consequences for me. Within days, I was largely confined to bed. At the worst of times I was unable to move; at the best of times I could walk only a few steps. While I switched back to the original medication, the damage had been done. Unable to get out of bed on most days, I had to withdraw from journalism school to regain my health. My nineteenth birthday came and went without fanfare. I lay bedridden, as months, then years, passed. I felt as though I was drowning in a million tears, paralyzed by exhaustion and weakness. The words of my physician, specialist of specialists and the twentieth or so whom I had consulted, echoed in my head: “There is no cure. The disease will only get worse. You will need medication for the rest of your life just to keep you alive. You will certainly die without it. There is nothing else we can do for you.” On the rare occasions when I could lift my limbs to leave the bed, I sought refuge by sitting in the sun. The warmth of its rays and the fresh smell of the outdoor air gave me a sense of peace and took my mind off my problems. This was my first clue that perhaps nature offered me healing where the medical system had failed. In the moments when I could sit up and read, I began to study nutri tion by distance education. As I began to practice some of the dietary suggestions I was learning about, I started to notice changes in my health: I had more energy, better movement, and increased healing. Slowly I began to feel better, and I immersed myself more fully into my studies of natural medicine and nutrition. When I could, I even ventured out into a nearby forest and picked plants that I dried or preserved to use as remedies. As my healing progressed further, I started working part time at a local natural food store, sharing my knowledge with people seeking to regain their health after the medical system had failed them, too. Eventually, I was able to start my own health food store and nutri tional consulting practice. Finally I was on my path, I thought. 2 E1CINTRO.indd 2 7/30/10 4:08:11 PM
