PREFACE
This book is dedicated to my wife and it is only natural to me to
express my profound gratitude to her in the first place. Without
her repeated encouragement and constructive criticism I would
not have succeeded in completing the work.
To my first teacher of Greek, Professor Ingemar Diiring, I am
deeply indebted for his inspiring instruction and personal interest
during earlier stages of my Greek studies.
This thesis has been accomplished under the guidance of Professor
Cajus Fabricius. I thank him heartily for his stimulating and gen
erous encouragement during different stages of my work. His keen
interest in my project of research has always been inspiring. Only
thanks to his thoroughgoing criticism and invaluable advice was I
able to carry out this laborious investigation. I also express my
