SAVENOR, DIRECTOR OF CONGREGATIONAL EDUCATION Israel at 70: How Did We Get There and Where Are We Going? W hen was Israel established? Was it when Abraham set foot in the Promised Land, or was it when a democratic state in the Middle East was founded in 1948 under the leadership of David Ben-Gurion? The answer is not just a matter of interpreting history. The question reflects different approaches to the very foundations of the modern State of Israel. Did Israel come into being as a biblical birthright or through a vote by the United Nations? Over the coming year we will celebrate Israel’s 70th anniversary by exploring Israel’s story and imagining its future. To launch this exciting family in Israel and sending one’s Chaim Weizmann, the first president year, our annual Shabbaton will children off to be soldiers.
