Members of the editorial team were based in their own countries and thus in constant contact with their own language, making use of the unparalleled data¬ bases maintained and continually expanded by the two publishers for their celebrated native-speaker dictionaries such as the Concise Oxford Dictionary and Das Grosse Wörterbuch der Deutschen Sprache. German and English editors met regularly in order to discuss the text in detail, ensure consistency, and achieve precise meshing together of the two languages. The vocabulary is up to date, and regional language has been extensively covered. Meanings are precisely classified and differentiated to guide the reader to the correct translation; general translations have been carefully chosen for maximum usefulness; many phrases and sentences are translated in their entirety where guidance is needed on style, usage, or word order. Extensive appendices give help with grammar, punctuation, letter writing, and numerical expressions such as those for time and money. This is the first bilingual dictionary ever to be produced by a team based in both language areas. We are confident that it will make a significant contribution in an age when the language barrier is coming to be the only one remaining between nations of the European Community, and that it will meet the needs of translators, business people, teachers, and secondary-school, high-school, college, and university students in the 1990s.
