Acknowledgements
This is the work of many years and many hands. Shaye Cohen began it, thinking he
could translate and annotate the Mishnah single- handedly. When he realized that the
completion of that task would exceed the divinely mandated limit of 120 years, he
recruited two others to join him as editors, Robert Goldenberg and Hayim Lapin. Even
with the dedicated efforts of all three editors, the project seemed to go on without end;
now that the project is finally done, our gratitude is due most of all to our contributors,
whose names are listed collectively in the table of contents and individually in the
introductions to each tractate.
