Get Your Life in Balance! Foreword The Two Voices of Health Dr. Leonard Coldwell has written this remarkable handbook for health with two voices. Like a singer producing not one beautiful tone but two at the same time, these two voices blend into a harmonious song of health and potential. And the remarkable thing is that every single person who reads— and follows—this beautiful book will be able to sing that way, too. And their words, and the glorious melody of health and empowerment will be theirs, and theirs alone! The two voices are the voice of the deeply informed, knowledgeable expert in physiology, medicine, neurology, biochemistry, pathology, research and clinical care—of which Dr. Coldwell is—and the homey, chatty, straight-from-the-shoulder Dutch uncle who tells you what is really going on, with compassion, but with no patience for self pity or soppy excuses. So, in your hands, on the pages of this book, you have a tell-it-like-it-is friend and a scientific integrator who can make the complicated business of the life sciences simple, clear and, most important, comprehensible. Dr. Coldwell ties all of the relevant sciences into one neat package with your life and shows you how, in simple, concise and well-laid-out steps, how it works and what to do about it. Stress kills! Of that fact, there is no doubt. However, stress, without the well-developed diseases it causes us to develop is of no financial interest (except as it allows anti-stress drugs to make sales, of course). If stress were to disappear tomorrow, the entire medical industry (which really means pharmaceutical industry) would go up in well-deserved flames, except for the emergency room services and skills. Without stress to precipitate at least 85% of all diseases and more than 90% of all doctors’ visits, the economic cataclysm, matched only by the magnitude of the joy and health—and recovered wealth—of billions of people, would be nearly unthinkable in size. So treating stress has very little money in it, and a great deal of income and economic potential through so many people being so sick for so long. Some years ago, during my medical practice in New York State, I had a problem. Using NeuroBioFeedback, my husband, Maj. General Albert Stubblebine III (US Army, Ret.) and I were using NeuroBioFeedback (then called “EEG Biofeedback”) to treat a wide variety of difficulties. These were people with diabetes, cancer, heart disease, cataclysmic head injuries and just about everything else you can think of, that had no hope, no cure and no where to go. They came to us because word travels fast when very ill people get cured and suddenly become radiantly well. The results we were getting were nothing short of fantastic: within a short time, generally using three treatments per week of 30 minutes each, whatever it was that the patient came in with was gone and the patient was not only symptom free, but gloriously, radiantly well. The conventional medical experts could not believe it and—predictably—said we must be quacks, because no one could fix whatever it was that their patient had come to us with. While the logic escapes me on that, the reason that frightened people would behave that way was instantly clear to us. They had no idea whatsoever how we were accomplishing this and, as experts, it made them very nervous, indeed, to have something they could not even describe, let alone reproduce, taking place. Simply put, they had no clue what we were doing that was working. The problem was, neither did we? We knew the protocols because we had studied with just about everyone teaching any kind of biofeedback and understood the mechanical part quite well. We knew the outcome, because we were able to measure it in laboratory and other objective ways. But what we did not know was why the treatment we were using worked and, more to the point, why about 85% of our patients become radiantly well, but nothing at all happened for the other 15% other than some calming. In other words, we were delivering miracles, but only at a B+ score. Anyone who knows either General Bert or me will tell you how deeply they understand that B+ is simply not an option. I do not do statistics because I am a math phobic. Dyslexic to the math, my ability to do the calculations required by statistics is less than zero, although I understand what they do and how they work. We knew that the answer lay within our very precise and detailed data, but we did not know how to get inside it, to find out what the secret was that would allow us to deliver an astonishing 100% miracle rate, an A+++, to every single patient who came through our door. Fortunately for all of us, we had a dear friend named Professor Michel Bounias, PhD, who was a world renowned toxicologist living in the South of France. Now toxicologists do numbers and statistics. It is their meat and potatoes. So I called Prof. Bounias and told him that I wanted to get him together with my data for about two weeks. I asked him if he had the time to leave France for that long and come examine our data. He said “Yes!” The project was not two weeks long. We published, over the next 11 years, about 50 papers: 25 on NeuroBioFeedback physiology and neurology and about 25 on the mathematical physics of consciousness, thought, intent, will and their impact on the physical world. These papers, in their totality, became known as the “Alexandria Papers” after the Alexandria Institute of Integrative Medicine, our medical practice. They attracted the attention of mathematical physicists and Nobel Prize winners. A UNESCO meeting was convened to deal with the staggering implications of the work and Prof. Bounias began winning international honors as a Mathematical Physicist for the new mathematics of consciousness that he developed for these paper. But we still did not have our on-demand miracle. It was not until the last paper in the series, 11 years after we began to try to answer my simple questions, “How does NeuroBioFeedback work and how can we make it work better?” that we got the answer: the mental images formed in the brain at the conscious and unconscious levels create changes in the receptor states, position, and function of every single cell. You see, there are huge numbers of proteins sticking through the membranes of every single cell. They change their configuration and therefore their function, on the basis of what is anticipated, not what has occurred. Therefore, every receptor in every cell in the body responds not to what happened, but what was perceived. Health, then, returned, seemingly miraculously, when we taught the patient to teach his/her own brain/body/cell/being to reach for what would create wellness. In other words, the killing stress of the patient’s life and often impending death, which was instructing every receptor in the body to act as if the terrible thing anticipated in the chronic stress state had already, happened. The mental images and the programs they rested in were directing the receptors to bring about the very thing that was so difficult or problematic to the person who had the disease or diagnosis. But we realized that through the NeuroBioFeedback, different conscious and unconscious mental and emotional images were being constructed and installed. The net result was that we were triggering the body’s own capacity to heal itself, based on its total and unique depth of empowered capacity. We learned from this how to focus differently for the reluctant 15% and our clinical “grade” went from a B+ to and A++; but not an A+++, since there are always patients who do not want to get better or relived of their disease. These people stopped treatment before the treatment was finished, stating clearly that they did not want to live, were not willing to give up their disease (or, sometimes, their disability payment) and, although we saw this as a tragedy, it is up to each and every one of us to decide what becomes of our health, our fate and our bodies so we respected the wishes of the patient. Ironically, when Professor Bounias, a man who we not only respected intellectually, but loved personally, and referred to as our “French Scientist- in-Law” because we spent so much time together, traveled together to meetings, etc, and regarded as a beloved family member, developed signet cell cancer (a virulent type of stomach cancer), although he came to us for treatment, it was only because he knew he should, not because he wanted to live. How did we know that? First of all, although he knew the success rate of our work with cancer patients, he waited four months to call us and tell us his diagnosis. During that time he did no treatment, not even through enhancing focuses and stress relief, although he understood very well how powerful that could be. Instead, he waited. After four months, he called us and told us that he had a rapidly progressing tumor. I immediately arranged for a ticket to be waiting for him at De Gaulle airport in Paris the next morning. He took the plane and arrived at our office. After getting him settled in his hotel, we began treating him. In the first NeuroBioFeedback session, after his arrival, we were setting goals (as Dr. Coldwell teaches you to do in his book) and asked him to see, hear, feel, smell, taste what it would mean when his health was perfect. He did not do that. Instead, he said, “I have done all I have come here to do. My work on this planet is finished.” No amount of input from us had any impact. His mental/emotional image was that he was finished. Because we loved him, we did not accept that and proceeded to conduct our treatments. Within days after he arrived, he needed emergency surgery because the cancer caused serious internal bleeding. The surgeon came out of the Operating Room and told us that he was so riddled with cancer that there was absolutely nothing to do but make him comfortable and make funeral arrangements. We did just the opposite and three weeks later, when another surgery was performed to debulk, or reduce the volume of the tumor, I was present in another Operating Room when the surgical oncologist stared down in wonder and said, “There is virtually no tumor here! There is only one tiny patch on the outside of the esophagus! My GOD! What have you been doing?” Our beloved friend, however, had other plans for himself. As Dr. Coldwell says so beautifully, “I can cure the disease, but I cannot cure every patient.” Professor Bounias abruptly terminated all treatment, said goodbye to us for the last time and went home to France to die. The cancer was curable. His determination not to live longer was terminal. Use Dr. Coldwell’s book wisely; use it deeply and use it well. Remember that every page is full of both wisdom and science and even if the process is unfamiliar, or even uncomfortable, the resolution of stress through its mental/emotional/neurological/physical detoxification and replacement with healthy neural connections, which then lead to healthy mental/emotional and physical outcomes is the doorway to health, empowerment, authentic living and stress free accomplishment and joy in a healthy body, mind, heart and spirit. Because, you see, the distinction between them is artificial. There is nothing in the mind that is not represented in the body. There is nothing in the body that is not represented in the mind. And the spoiler, the flat tire of the elegant mind/body/heart/spirit vehicle of consciousness, is stress. “Eustress,” or positive stress, is a mobilizer. No one gets sick or dies from the pumped up energy of joy, accomplishment, delight, dedication and devotion. But pathological stress kills. So teaching you how to turn stress in power, to eustress and accomplishment is a great gift. Take Dr. Coldwell at his word: stress causes disease. Learn how to reformat stress at the deepest levels and the cause of the disease is out of the way. Then the magnificent, instinct based healing system which you are endowed with can take over, with a little help from its friend: you! Be well. Your new friend —Dr. Leonard Coldwell Preface The Great Challenge we Call Life IBMS™—Instinct - Based - Medicine® - System™ (All rights reserved) I have written this book with the latest information pertaining to the science of success, success training and conditioning, and with the information made available in personal motivational conditioning. Stress is simply the response to a threat, real or imagined, and the more we feel our life is threatened (whether it’s financially, physically, mentally or a relationship, a job situation, or simply the need for life’s recognition from our peers etc. ) the better the chance that this stress will either trigger a flight or fight response. Stress is triggered when we feel we cannot fight or run away from a dead-end job or relationship and we feel we are stuck with it. The more we hate our situation or cannot stand it anymore, the more mental and emotional stress we create—feeling of helplessness—causing depression or/and anxiety. Mental and emotional stress is the main cause— 86% to 95%—of all illness. Illnesses are usually caused by living in constant fears, worries doubts, lack of self love and self esteem, hopelessness and most of all lack of success in all parts of life. Anxiety is simply the reaction to stress, causing you to feel overwhelmed by life itself or certain parts of life or tasks, goals etc. Depression is nothing less then the knowledge life could be better than it is right now—the feeling of losing, being out of control or simply having no hope! Depression and anxiety is always caused by not doing the right actions and not having a true foundation built on your own individual personality, your individual character traits, your common sense and instinct! Living with compromises against yourself on a regular basis is the guarantee for one or all: Stress, Anxiety or Depression. With this book I will help you to create a stress, anxiety and depression proof life! I will give you the education tools and coaching you need to learn how to see and treat life’s “problems” and how to see them as “challenges” and I will give you the knowledge and action plans as to how to take on this great opportunity—this great change that we
