A space shuttle is destroyed during flight, and the CIA recalls disgraced agent Blaine McCracken to uncover the people responsible
A space shuttle disappears during a routine repair mission, 180 miles above Earth’s surface. An intelligence operative with a dark secret is murdered, his car set ablaze, while he is in the middle of fulfilling a depraved fantasy. And a reporter receives a message from a dying man that suggests the organization responsible may be one of the world’s most prestigious corporations.
The government knows just one man who can untangle this mystery: a throwaway on the deactivated list. Exiled to a desk job in Paris for stepping on the wrong toes, Blaine McCracken is a killer—a ruthless pursuer of truth who will let no one, friend or enemy, stand in his way when civilian lives are in danger.
McCracken gets results, and his country needs him now more than ever.

5.0 out of 5 stars The first Blaine McCracken novel July 2, 2002
By Amazon Customer
Format:Mass Market Paperback
"The Omega Command", Jon Land's fifth espionage thriller, is the first one to feature his recurring hero, Blaine McCracken. Like his other novels, this one hits the ground running, contains little to no fluff, and keeps the reader's attention throughout the book.
This one opens with the destruction of a space shuttle by an unknown entity in space. Ground control is unable to see it or prevent it. McCracken comes on the scene with an attempted hijacking. From there, he is recruited without the top U.S. brass knowing of his involvement.
Meanwhile, a high profile reporter is given a disk with information related to a big corporation's actions. Once she decides to pursue this lead, she become embroiled in the big mystery. Eventually, the reporter's and McCracken's worlds collide and they must team with each other to prevent the U.S. from being plunged into chaos on Christmas Eve.
If you like quick reads that are full of adventure, twists and turns, double agents and the like, pick up this novel or any of Jon Land's novels. While this, and many of his other early novels are out of print, they can still be found through various used book sources.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very Readable April 27, 2011
By Smokey VINE VOICE
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
The Omega Command, first in a series, has all the elements of a great techno-thriller: a "ruggedly handsome", principled, do-it-my-way, out-of-favor agent; a gorgeous, smart, heroine; feuding federal agencies; terrorists; covert ops; rich, corrupt, ruthless men greedy for more power and money; bombs; violence; and enemies disguised as friends. It is an enjoyable, compulsive read that blessedly avoids some of the thriller clichés -- like women throwing themselves at the hero and the hero bedding everything in sight (although in future books, we do expect the luscious Sandy Lister and the "ruggedly handsome" Blaine McCracken to get together) and high tech jargon that goes on page after boring (to me) page. Author Jon Land writes well and does a particularly good job of penning a prologue that makes the reader turn the page for more. ANd from this reviewer, who is not an avid techno-thriller reader, that's real praise.

4.0 out of 5 stars Introducing Blaine McCracken! January 22, 2013
By mrliteral VINE VOICE
Format:Mass Market Paperback
By certain standards, I really shouldn't like Jon Land's books, particularly his Blaine McCracken series. After all, they are over-the-top with out-of-nowhere rescues and outlandish plots. Then again, I believe that's actually why I like them; they are quick, fun novels that aim to do nothing but entertain.
Blaine McCracken is Land's first series character, a superspy who cuts through bureaucratic rules and will take on any enemy of America (or in some cases, all of civilization or humanity). As big and tough as he is, he actually has a bigger, tougher sidekick: an Indian named Wareagle who between fights often talks of spirits and such. Of course, such formidable heroes require super-villains to fight.
In this story, McCracken must contend with a vast conspiracy that is linked to a radical group out to create chaos. Meanwhile, an intrepid reporter has unconvered her own conspiracy, one that links a reclusive billionaire to an attack on the space shuttle. Eventually, McCracken and the reporter will find that the two conspiracies are linked and discover the true agenda of the bad guys, one that threatens the existence of the United States.
I've almost always enjoyed Land's books, but never more so than with his earlier works (which include the McCracken novels). Because they are so intentionally outlandish (like the literary equivalent of a James Bond movie), they can get away with a lot of seeming flaws that would do in a more serious novel. Of late, Land has focused on somewhat more mundane characters, creating books that are good, but somehow lack the flavor of his earlier works. Happily, McCracken has apparently returned after a 14 year absence (in Pandora's Temple). Let's hope it's not just a one-time thing.

1.0 out of 5 stars dumb, boring, cliche' and absurd February 20, 2014
By Made Alive
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
starts out with a real sick, and unnecessary scene of a guy having sex with children, then goes downhill from there. The main character is neither interesting nor believable. One absurdity after another, with cliche' upon cliche', and the "hero" excaping one impossible situation after another. The villains are comic-book-like and the plot is just ridiculous. Don't get me started on the magical indian. I couldn't even bring myself to finish it - which is rare for me - because I just didn't care how it ended (although it was so predictable, I can guess the ending) Don't waste your time.

4.0 out of 5 stars Super in Many Ways January 2, 2014
By Ken C.
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
The Omega command is my first experience with author Jon Land, and all in all, it was a good one. I found myself wrapped up in the storyline, eager to see what happens next. I agree with those who wonder how these supermen characters can win every battle and go on to the next one, and I admit to skimming over some of them, knowing our hero will come out on top. But that is not unusual with novels centered on one superman whose help is crucial to solving the problem. usually, he is the only one in all of America who can do it. But, it's a story, and if you jo along for the ride, you can have a good time, as I did with Omega Command.

The book is a good read with the potential of a great character (Blaine McCracken) but there are too many close calls and miracle escapes. The escapes get boring after a while.
