Hilton Jr. at the University of Tennessee, where I served as his advisor. Chad and his wife, B. Jane Stanfield, who also worked with me, participated in research projects of mutual interest that led to several publications. They now have completed successful careers at the University of Alabama, where Chad served as the associate dean for International Business Programs and Bennett faculty fellow in International Business, Management, and Marketing, and Jane re- tired as the associate provost for International Education and Global Outreach. Having entered the field of business communications, Chad discontinued his work on Seasons for Fasting and passed the project along to me. Numerous obligations of my own intervened, delaying its completion until now. The present edition owes much to the interest and support of col- leagues through the years. Along with Chad and Jane, scholars who have been especially helpful include Carl T. Berkhout, Mary Blockley, David Bright, Tom Cable, Patrick Conner, the late James Cross, Richard Dammery, James Dean, John H. Fisher, Rob Fulk, Jim Hall, Tom Hall, Toni Healey, the late Connie Hieatt, Joyce Hill, Aaron Kleist, Gay Marie Logsdon, Eric Stanley, Paul Szarmach, and Joseph Trahern. Additionally, the staffs at the British Library and at the University of Delaware Library were instrumental to my work. To all of these indi- viduals, I offer sincere gratitude. Any mistakes or infelicities, however, are solely my responsibility. Final preparation of the text has been aided by my husband, Bob Netherland, and our close friends, Buddy and Jack. vii
