CONCISION,leannessofwords,isanaturalplacetobeginbecausewordinessissocommoninstudentwritingandbecauselosing(unlikeweight)beingconciseisn’treallysohard.Itusuallyworksbyprocessofelimination:wewatchwhatwesay,askourselveswhetherwhatwe’vesaidisessentialtowhatwemean,eliminatewhatisn’t.Therealandworkisoftenfiguringoutwhatexactlywewantedtosayinthefirstplace.Buttryingtobeconcisehelpswiththattoo—byhelpingusseewhatwedon’tmean.Concisioncanaddremarkablegracetoourprose.ftalsomakesourproseeasiertoreadandunderstand.Yetmanyofusareafraidofwritingconciselybecausedoingsocanmakeusfeelexposed.Concisionleavesusfewerwordstohidebehind.Ourinsightsandideasmightappearpunystrippedofthoseinessentialphrases,sentencesinwords,andwhichweroughthemout.Wecutoutmightevenwonder,werewetothefat,wouldanythingbeleft?It’sstudentsnowonder,then,thatmanymakelittleattempttobeconcise—may,infact,outoftheirwaynotgotobe—andoftensocouplethisstrategymistaken.withastylejustasThoughyoucancertainlybewordywithoutpompously—andwritingtheotherwayaround—thetwousdirlgohandinhandoftenthatit’ssotoconsidertogether,themHere’showlotshavetoofstudentsthinktheywriteincollege:
