Acknowledgments
As with any publication there are many who contribute in essential and
crucial ways not only to the act and discipline of writing but to the
experience, passion and understanding that forms the basis of the knowledge
and wisdom of the author.
In my own case this work would be utterly incomplete without an
explicit acknowledgement of the men and women who have formed my
growth, guided my life, and helped to carve out my experiences within the
dark world that we all inhabit.
To my late father I give thanks for his passionate, powerful and deep
examples of class and intelligence. Without his hand resonating through the
shaping of my life, I would not have found dignity in it.
To my late mother I give thanks for her adamant, unwavering insistence
that a love of learning be the foundation of all my interactions in the world.
Without her fostering of my self-education, I would have grown into an
ignorant, dogmatic man.
It is with grave and permanent reverence that I acknowledge the
investment and mentoring of the ninja. Theirs is a long and challenging
journey to absorb the often frightening lessons of mind and heart, bone and
fist. Absent that sharing of their priceless knowledge I would be long dead.
Peter Paton was extraordinarily helpful in his independent review of the
manuscript drafts, often finding obscure errors and points of clarity that I
simply could not spot on my own. Because of his painstaking, methodical
assistance this book shines with polish at a very granulated level.
Joe Katzman has been a wise and invaluable mentor, serving as a
brilliantly insightful voice of clarity that sharpens structure and helps to
identify targets of direction for this work. His ability to drill down to the core
essence and build out the message delivery in my writing is superb, and his
generous friendship is greatly appreciated. His immensely gracious authoring

In particular, appreciation goes out to my lovely and absolute crazy,
whisky-drinking, gun-toting, homesteading cowgirl great-niece Gigi. Her
ranch is a haven for the entire extended family, and we are all delighted in the
sanctuary of love and welcome it provides.
To my older brother I give thanks for the guidance and competition that
has been immensely motivating to me as I make my way in the dark world. I
showed you the picture of a gorgeous girlfriend; you confessed you were
dating a royal princess. I mentioned I’m meeting a billionaire; you could not
spare a moment to talk because you were on your way up to the office of
Donald Trump. I share my recent acquisition… and you inform me that you
are wearing Trump’s tie, given directly from his neck in personal
appreciation.
It is comforting to be continually surpassed by your older brother. You
are the right man to be the head of our ancient blood, and I know our father is
vastly proud.
To my older sister I send my love and laughter, and immense gratitude
for the warmth, fierce protection and occasional concussions you provided
me while growing up in the dark world.
That moment of truth in the den shaped my entire life, and gave me
strength to get up and walk.
To my little sister, I send my strength and barbarous ferocity, knowing
that despite the tender and gentle exterior there lives a spirit of icy
competence and brilliant testimony inside you. I am very proud to have seen
it flash forward with severe and unyielding strength.
You are an honor to our lineage.
To my oldest daughter, I send my thanks and admiration for the
tenacious, no-nonsense spirit that has been a constant demonstration of joy
for me. Your intelligence, determination and focus are deeply ingrained in
you and it is a source of much admiration for where I see you taking your
life.
To my youngest daughter, I share a smile and pride in your absolute
ferocity of spirit and the intense enrichment of color, beauty and song that
exude from you with bottomless delight and power. Your loyalty and
kindness are markers that will carry you far in life.
To my son, I give thanks for your firm leap at the ladders and challenges
of the dark world, and share my pride in your indomitable spirit and deep,
impenetrable intelligence. You carry heritage of a thousand years in your
veins, and I know that you will crack open the future in your own right.
Lastly I wish to thank my wife Lauren for her inestimable contributions
to my fulfilling experience as a human being. I would not be the same
without it.
Authors often speak of the immense toll that their craft takes upon their
loved ones through the long, ceaseless hours of writing; the temper tantrums
that flare with frustration in struggle over a concept or a paragraph, and the
scary exultation that accompanies breakthrough of ideas and the outpouring
of words on a page.
It isn’t a casual acknowledgement I deliver here. It is a very serious one,
and Lauren has been an invaluable friend and sounding board, a partner
through the passionate, roaring rollercoasters of literary creation.
Her patience, her love, her steadfastness and her integrity are vast
enough to embrace and shelter a man forging through the crashing tides of
the dark world, and greet him with warmth and embraces on his return home
with the throne.
