HMD is an international day of remembrance for victims of the Holocaust and other genocides. The theme for this year is ‘speak up, speak out’ against persecution, victimisation and bullying. All residents are invited to a free event to mark HMD, which will take place in the main hall at Newham Town Hall, East Ham, on Friday 27 January between 10am and 12noon. A creative writing and drawing competition is being held for all Newham young people aged from seven to 19. There are three categories of entry: seven to 11, 11 to 14 and 14 to 19. Work can be any form of creative writing (of no more than 400 words) or a picture. Submissions must be your own work and refl ect HMD’s theme for this year. One winner from each category will receive a £30 book token. Winners will be invited to present their work at the HMD event and extracts from winning submissions will be printed in the Newham Mag.
