PREFACE
THIS TRANSLATION o£ the Ncw Testament was undertaken at the
request of the Hierarchy of England and Wales, in 1939.
The translatorwillbegrateful,if the readers of this editionwillbeat
the pains of writing to him, to express in general their approval or
disapproval of the lines he has followed, and to point out any passage
which, in their opinion, specially calls for correction. He must ask to
be excused the duty of acknowledging such letters, but he will be
careful to weigh whatever suggestions are made.
In this edition, the old principle of beginning a new line of print
with each new verse has been abandoned. The verse references are,
however, given at the side of the page.
The translator's thanks are due, not only to the Hierarchy, who have
made it possible for the work to be carried through, but to many
others who have taken a friendly interest in it. Above all to his Lord-
ship the Bishop ofLancaster, Father Hugh Pope, O.P., S.T.M., D.S.S.,
the Revd. T. Bird, D.D., Ph.D., the Very Revd. Mgr. Barton, D.D.,
L.S.S., Consultor of the Pontifical Biblical Commission, the Revd.
W. Brown, D.D., the Revd. J. A. O'Flynn, L.S.S., and Fathers
Martindale and Corbishley, of the Society of Jesus; their criticisms,
throughout, have been of the utmost value, and have had a greater in-
fluence on the present form of the text than they themselves can be
induced to realize. Further acknowledgements are due to the Right
Revd. H. Cogan, D.D., who contributed to the expenses of re-typing,
to the Revd. Ivo Thomas, O.P., who gave an extra revision to the
