COMMENCEMENT EDITION 1998 The 235th Graduating Class of Governor Dummer Academy presents.... The 1998 Milestone Governor Dummer Academy MA Byfield, 01922 When you are old andgrey and full ofsleep, And nodding by the fire, take down this book, And slowly read, and dream of the soft look Your eyes had once, and their shadows deep; How many loved yourmoments ofgladgrace, And loved your beauty with love false or true, But one man loved the pilgrim Soul in you, And loved the sorrows ofyour changing face; And bending down beside the glowing bars, Murmur, a little sadly, how Love fled Andpaced upon the mountains overhead And hid his face amid a crowd ofstars. ~ William Butler Yeats, "When You Are Old" The rain falls incessantly from the dark sky above. The students, cloaked in heavy rain jackets, dash in and out of buildings to escape, as if they would melt from the showers. They take shelter in the warm comfort and spend little time away from it The outside world is free from the normal chatter and the slightest sounds echo in the abyss of fog. The campus appears deserted. How- ever, one man strolls down the sidewalk, seem- ingly untouched by the rain. With his umbrella as his only protection, he walks, savoring the rain's sweetness. This is his manner; he is calm and deliberate in all his actions, yet un- afraid of his emo- tions. He teaches with a passion that reaches deep into his students' hearts and \ minds. Serving as a dorm parent since he was first appointed in 1985 has allowed him to build a special bond with the stu- dents in his care. He also coached lacrosse for several years, al- lowing for yet an- other connection to the community. He is the definition of a caring and involved teacher. Often taking the time to discuss students' problems at length, he is unable to walk by an upset stu- dent without pausing to inquire about his or her welfare. His infor- mal demeanor sets ev- eryone around him at ease. He could easily take the position as "most extracurricular." On cam- pus, his work with the Drama Program has set new standards for our productions Moreover, he insures that our exposure to the theatre continues off campus as well by performing miracles, allowing us the opportunity to view some of the world's most fa mous plays. This man's community involvement extends far beyond the con fines of campus. The plays that he has directed in the surrounding communi ties and his work at the Fire House in Newburyport, with his wife, Bonnie Jean, are innumerable but always memorable. The next time you see him riding his bike, wearing his big wnite sunglasses, thank him. For all that he is and all that he has done, the 1 998 Milestone is dedicated to. Wann Mr. Paul H.
