When he was a young boy, both of his parents and his grandparents died, so he went to live with his uncles. Bradford was a sickly child, so he couldn’t work in the fields. Instead, he spent his days reading the Bible. He thought a lot about how people around him worshipped God. By the time he was 12, he knew he wanted something different. William Bradford 6 US_006-007_Where_it_all_began.indd 6 27/02/2020 15:36 Bradford joined a religious group known as the Separatists. Then he met William Brewster in the nearby town of Scrooby. Bradford went to a church service at Brewster’s home and found just what he had been looking for. Led by a young minister named John Robinson, the people believed that faith and discipline should touch every part of their lives. They also thought that the Church of England, with its fancy rituals and ceremonies, was not a true church. It was this last belief that forced the group, known as Separatists, to meet in secret. England’s King James I was the head of the Church of England, and he saw the Separatists as a threat. When the congregation was discovered, some members were thrown in prison. Others were harassed. It was time for the group—including 17-year-old William Bradford—to leave England. England’s King I James saw the Separatists as a threat. 7 US_006-007_Where_it_all_began.indd 7 27/02/2020 15:36 A home in Holland The Separatists planned to escape to Amsterdam, Holland. But it wouldn’t be easy —King James refused to give them permission to leave England. They had to find a way to flee in secret. In Scotland 1608 they hired a captain they could trust to take them to Amsterdam. On the night of the voyage, most of the men made it onto the ship. Then soldiers appeared, and the captain panicked and set sail. The men continued on to Amsterdam, but their families were sent to jail. It would d n be many months before they a England l were reunited in Holland. e r I Scrooby Today, Holland is known as the Netherlands. s e Amsterdam al d n W H o lla Leiden LONDON Southampton Belgiu m h C han n el s gli n E France 8 US_008-009_Holland.indd 8 24/02/2020 14:07
