Page 4 The Maryland Numismatist - Spring, 2018 President's Message Hello again! It has indeed been a while since I wrote a President's Message. Being elected Maryland State Numismatic Association (MSNA) President for the next two years is an honor, regardless of the fact that I ran unopposed. Like most numismatic organizations these days, the bulk of the work is being done by a relatively small cadre of volunteers. These good folks step in to make sure things get done and rarely complain. So it is my turn to help keep MSNA a strong and viable organization. With the help of the current Board of Directors and a few new volunteers, I really believe we can make MSNA even stronger and help prepare our organization for the future. With this in mind, MSNA really needs many more of its members and clubs to take an active role. My plan is to get together with the Board and officers to find more ways to incorporate our members and clubs in our mission to strengthen our base and focus on increasing the numismatic information available to our members. One way that the Maryland State Numismatic Association educates our members is our yearly numismatic exhibits competition at the Whitman Coin Show. Our exhibits offer our members and the collecting community a chance to see and learn about varied areas of coins, paper money, tokens, medals, elongated coins, etc. Members and member clubs are also encouraged to put together exhibits to share their items and their history by entering an exhibit. Exhibit forms can be found each year in the Autumn Maryland Numismatist. Once again this year, MSNA is holding its annual raffle. Tickets are going on sale soon. We will be sending some to each of our member clubs in good standing. Please sell/use these tickets and get your stubs and money back to us ASAP. Some clubs buy the tickets outright on behalf of the club. One club did this a few years ago and won a gold coin by buying the winning ticket and also got another gold coin as the seller of the first place prize. Some clubs use the tickets as door prizes at their meetings. Some just sell them to members. Your call, just please help us sell these tickets. Tickets will be available at each of the three Whitman Shows at the registration desk. Speaking of the raffle, I would like to thank Carl Ostiguy for sponsoring the printing of our tickets once again this year. You can find information about Carl's shows on the reverse of these raffle tickets and in our journal. Please support these shows. Thanks Carl! Kochel, 1932-2017 Gerald "Jerry" L. Kochel, 85, of Lititz, passed away on November 10th, 2017, at Landis Homes. He was born in Ephrata, PA on October 23, 1932 to Harold and Lillian Christiansen Kochel and was the husband of Sandra Adams. Jerry was a life-long coin collector and a member of the Red Rose Coin Club, Lebanon Valley Coin Club, American Numismatic Associa- tion, Central States Numismatic Association, Florida United Numisma- tists, and Pennsylvania Association of Numismatists. He joined MSNA as member 605 in 1988 before he became life member 44 in 1999. He served as both exhibitor and judge. In 2009, when MSNA moved our exhibit competition to the Whit- man Expo, Jerry won Best of Show with an impressive exhibit of a clock of twelve half cents with curved clips in different positions. The photo shows him receiving his award from Exhibit Chair Bryce Doxzon and President Frank Murphy. In 2010, he won best of show with an exhibit on continental currency signed by Adam Hubley. He stopped exhibiting around that time. In addition to his wife, he is survived by son Jere Kochel; granddaughter Amy Kochel; and three step children: Sherri Forry, Jeff Adams, and Steven Adams; and 5 step grandchildren: Brant Forry, LeAnne Adams, Jared Adams, Emma Adams and Max Adams. 2017 Raffle Results The annual gold raffle was held as advertised at 2 PM on the Sunday of the fall Whitman Coin Expo in Baltimore. John Lemayski won the first prize of an uncirculated Constitution Bicentennial $5 gold piece 1989-W, and the seller of that ticket, Lenard Brokos, won a gold Mexico 1945 2 pesos. Tim Master won second prize, a 1907 Liberty Head gold quarter eagle. Third prize was a gold Mexico 1945 2½ pesos, and it was won by Darrell Kaeding. Wayne Howell won fourth prize, a proof 2012 Star Spangled Banner silver dollar. The original winner of the second prize did not write down their address and would not return our phone calls, so a new winner was drawn. Each circle represents the same number of dollars; because we had more revenue than expense, the difference is shown as a surplus at the top left of the expenses pie chart. Revenue Expenses The largest impact of using accrual versus cash basis of accounting is on life memberships--revenues earned for life membership are from payments received years ago, so regular dues and life membership dues are shown separately. Sales are just raffle tickets. Journal expenses include printing, postage, and the web site hosting fee. Prize expense includes raffle, exhibit, and door prizes at meetings. The cost of printing raffle tickets is included with the raffle ticket prizes, while the advertising underwriting the ticket printing makes up the bulk of donations revenue. Administrative expenses include meeting room rental. Expenses associated with the John Henry collection include the safe deposit box rental and insurance. Revenues are down across the board ($510 less in 2017 versus 2016), and our surplus has dropped around $150. However, gold prices have gone down enough to save us $140 in raffle and exhibit prizes. We have held more meetings at the Whitman Expo to save on room rental and stopped providing snacks. Next year we should see savings in the journal as we move to three journals per year, although ad revenue will also drop. The Maryland Numismatist – Spring, 2018 Page 9 Page 10 The Maryland Numismatist - Spring, 2018 Membership Report The MSNA by-laws require the treasurer to prepare an annual report on the membership. I am also giving the report for all years back to 2010. MSNA has six types of membership. Regular, club and junior members must pay each year. Life, club life, and honorary life members are inducted once and stay members until they pass away, the club is dissolved, or they resign. Honorary life members become life members immediately, while regular and club life members must be a member in good standing the three years previous. So the only changes to life membership are new members and deceased members, while regular members can join, renew (which can be paid in advance or arrears), lapse, or return after a lapse of at least one year. Our membership increased for the first time since we stopped holding our own coin show in 2008, though 2017 had our lowest membership level in recent years. We had 137 members in 2007. 2011 2012 2013 2014 2015 2016 2017 Regular New 7 3 4 3 1 1 6 Renewed 48 43 41 40 36 31 29 Returned 1 4 2 1 4 4 Convert to LM -1 -2 -2 -3 -3 Lapsed -4 -10 -6 -7 -6 -7 -4 Total 55 47 49 45 38 36 39 Note: Total = New + Renewed + Returned = Previous Total + New + Returned – Convert to LM – Lapsed Life Begin 65 67 66 67 67 69 70 Honorary 1 1 1 New 2 1 1 2 2 3 3 Deceased -1 -3 -1 -2 -2 -3 End 67 66 67 67 69 70 70 Combined 121 114 116 114 108 106 109
