He went to the local nursery and bought several beautiful plants. After clearing the land, he put the plants in the ground. For the first few months, his Garden was magnificent. The colors were spectacular. His neighbors would often slow down as they drove by his home to admire the beautiful Garden that George had created. In fact, George could hardly wait to get home from work every day so he could bask in the lush beauty of his new Garden. But later in the season, some strange things began to happen in his Garden. He noticed several different varieties of weeds growing where none had ever grown before. He also noted that several of the plants had a peculiar fungus-like material on the leaves and stems. He further observed that some of the trees had insects burrowing under their bark and that the leaves were looking unhealthy. George nervously ran down to the garden shop where he had bought the plants and bought the best herbicide, fungicide, and insecticide that he could find. Only the best would do for his wonderful Garden. He rushed home and sprayed and sprayed and sprayed. xiii And for a short time,it seemed that the chemicals worked—the weeds withered, the fungus lightened up, and the insects seemed to go away. But George’s elation turned into frustration a few weeks later, when all the problems returned with a vengeance. In desperation, George asked his neighbor a few doors away for advice. (This neighbor, Kathy, also had a very nice garden, which seemed to be doing well.) Kathy told him that she had had similar problems for the first year of her garden. She had finally gotten advice from an old retired gardener named Frank. And that advice had made all the difference. George searched and finally was able to contact Frank. He joyfully hopped in his car and drove over to Frank’s place a few miles away. There on the front porch sat a quiet old man with weathered skin, Frank. George introduced himself and asked Frank if he could describe his problems to him and possibly get some advice. Frank said that he would do better than give advice—he wanted to actually take a walk through George’s Garden. They arrived back at the Garden, and Frank carefully examined each of the plants, felt the soil and took a sample, smelled the flowers, analyzed the sun/shade patterns, and observed the wildlife usage of the Garden—the birds, spiders, bees, and so forth. Frank then spoke to George about the Garden. “George, all the chemicals in the world will not cure the problems of your A Garden Parable Garden. Those give temporary fixes that in the long run might make things worse unless you correct the underlying causes.” George replied, “What underlying causes are you speaking of?” Frank said, “The Garden is fully capable of healing itself if you obey some very basic rules of gardening.” He went on. “First rule is that you have to prepare the soil and regularly feed the plants. Without proper nutrition, the plants cannot survive in a healthy way; they will always look sick and be more prone to disease. “Second rule is that proper watering is essential to all vital functions of the Garden. Regular watering whether you think it needs it or not is absolutely critical. “Next you must make sure that sunlight exposure is appropriate for each of the plants. Some like full sun and others prefer mostly shade. With the wrong amount of sun, the plants will do very poorly. For instance, this azalea is in full sun, and now it is yellowing and drooping. It was intended for shade or indirect light.” Frank went on and on. George frantically took notes as he gave his sage advice. His final piece of advice was, “So George, put the chemicals away for now. You might need them at some point to help out, but they will never be the whole answer. They are not a substitute for proven rules of gardening from the Creator which xv when followed strengthen your Garden, enabling it to have health and vitality from the inside out.” George gratefully took all of Frank’s advice and obeyed it. His Garden flourished, and he never needed the chemicals again, because the Garden was now equipped to heal itself of all its problems.
