The report concluded, among other things, that "sexual dysfunction is an important public health concern."What is in part so astonishing is that never before in medical literature has so bold aperspective been offered. The countryis in a sexualfunk, andwhat are we to do about it? TYitJAMAstudypresented some startling findings. Fullyforty- three percent of American women and thirty-one percent of American men suffer from sexual dysfunction. Again, close to half of the women and a little over a third of the men surveyed have problems with sexual desire as well as other "psychophysiological" factors. Now you may be thinking to yourself, they probably sur- veyed a small group ofpeople who were well up in years and there- fore had gradually lost their desire over time. And perhaps they never even liked sex. Not so. The survey group consisted of 1,749 women and 1,410 men aged 18 to 59 who were actively engaged in a sexual relationship. These weren't people who hadn't had sex in — years in fact, only those who reported at least one partner in the prior twelve-month period were interviewed. Those who were sex- ually inactive were excluded. Individuals who lived in group quarters such as barracks, college dormitories, and prisons, as well as those who don't speak Englishwell, were also excluded. The people in this — surveywere average Americans just like you. TheLibidoBreakthrough The authors of the study noted, the "experience ofsexual dys- function is more likely among women and men with poor physical and emotional health and overall well-being." Poor health and . . . lifestyle impair sexual health. You may wonder why this is so important, what is the big deal? The answer is threefold. First, ifyou have apartner, chances are, your lack ofsexual desire is upsetting.Whether or not it is a topic ofcon- versation between the two ofyou (or perhaps between your partner and a friend), it most likely leaves your mate in a state ofconfusion, anger, embarrassment, orfeelinginadequate. Second, whenyou don't have a fulfilling sexlifewithyourpartner, you are missing out on one — — oflife's greatest pleasures. And third a plain, simple reason sex is good for your health. (More on this in Chapter 2.) Given the compelling data oftheJAMA study, what options do we have to improve our sexual health?
