The JE <D in ji % D CLITICS wfmtu& $6.95 The JEW in AMERICAN POLITICS NATHANIEL WEYL This book explores with rare insight the paradoxical role of American Jewry in the political life of the nation. Nathaniel Weyl, long a student of differential group behavior, does not share the common fear of being called "controversial." He follows whatever path is indicated by the evidence and by the application of logical analysis to this evi- dence. The Jew in American Politics does not claim to have all the answers. But the an- swers presented in these pages are addressed to precisely the key questions. Is the Jewish self-image as a downtrodden and underdog group a fact or a myth? What is the actual extent of Jewish representation in the American intellectual, social, political and economic power structures? Why are Jews generally liberal-to-radical in their poli- tical stance even though they have more to lose than other groups from a radical trans- formation of the American system?* Is anti-Semitism an upper-class and con- servative attitude or is it primarily a violent expression of resentment by the ignorant, the unsuccessful and the discontented? Which societies have provided more opportunity and justice for national, racial and religious minorities: free enterprise systems or socialist ones (continued on back flap) Jacket Design by Geraldine M.
