Ho Joyce O'Connor Doris Scarpello VII Foreword T:e International Geographic Encyclopedia and Atlas is intended to fill the need for a completely up to-date one-volume encyclopedia of geographic names and terms. It is believed that this unique volume, which has the added benefit of an attractive and current atlas of the world, will provide the information to answer people's geographic inquiries. The rapid rate of change in international geographic and census data, combined with the growing sense of global interdependence, should ensure the general usefulness of the International Geographic Ency- clopedia and Atlas. New regions of the world are coming to prominence; new leaders, new countries, and new cities are constantly being mentioned in the news. Although the encyclopedia is primarily in tended for English-speaking readers, the wide variety of its coverage of peoples, countries, and cultures makes it a valuable reference for the international market, in keeping with the increased need for know ledge and the increased sophistication of readers in all parts of the world. The more than 25,000 entries go well beyond location and geographic statistics; they also show how to pronounce entry words and give information on history, economic importance, and educational and cultural institutions. One of the book's most helpful sources of information is a 64-page atlas of four-color maps, showing major cities and major physical and political features of every region of the world. This map section is followed by a 48-page index to the atlas, giving the page location of all important features. In addition, more than 200 black-and-white maps pinpoint the location of countries, U.S. states, and Canadian provinces. Population figures are from the most recent sources available and were revised as necessary up to the time the book was printed. Dates for population figures are also given. The appendix section updates major world events to June, 1979. The editors of The International Geographic Encyclopedia and Atlas would like to express apprecia tion to Columbia University Press for their cooperation and for making the geographic text entries of the New Columbia Encyclopedia available for adaptation. We wish to thank the people involved in our major survey of U.S. counties. All county seats of the United States have been included; information about population, dates of incorporation, manufacturing, and products have been supplied directly by the public officials of these locations. Thanks are due also to Rocappi, the typesetting division of Lehigh Press, Inc., for their help and assis tance in all phases of manuscript composition.
