For this book and any work | accomplish as an author, I will always be in debt to Julia A. Wagner, former Editor-in-Chief of Horoscope Magazine, who gave me an opportunity to write about astrology twenty years ago. Special indebtedness goes to Dennis Haskell of Time Cycles Research who encouraged me to write text for his remarkable astrological software. His Io series of astrology programs contains the natal report writer on which The Instant Horoscope Reader is based. The astrolog- ical fonts used in the book are one of many innovative font styles available from Time Cycles. I am truly grateful to Dennis, along with Elaine Tyropolis, Bob -Stuller, Joshua Jewell, and Chuck Weigand at Time Cycles for their treasured friendship and support. I am profoundly appreciative of the intelligence and editorial skills of Lauren Crasco and Gloria Freemire who patiently read and reread the manuscript. Their corrections and suggestions were insightful and somehow managed to keep my words and ideas from collapsing under their own weight. Grateful thanks must go to my family—Stan, David, Karen, and Aaron, who, despite my preoccupation and frequent absences, have unaccountably remained affectionate and loyal to me. [he valuable suggestions they made, necessary tasks they performed, and many personal favors they granted contributed in no small measure to the writing process. Never one to take things for granted, I also offer thanks to the gods of the reliable Xerox and the clever Macintosh. Any creativity and originality in this book reside solely in the presentation of the material—the success or failure for which | accept responsibility as well as blame. The content of its information belongs to astrology itself and to the gener- ations of astrologers who have recorded its ideas and observations since the beginning of history. I confess it isn't always easy to decide where to begin. Some people are intrigued with astrology’s long and colorful history. Some want to know if it’s like the daily horoscope columns they read in newspapers. Others are interested in how a horoscope is cast. There is one thing everyone always wants to know. “How,” they invariably ask me, “did you become interested in astrology?” To readers who may also wonder, let me reply that I began to study astrology for the same reason that motivated you to read this book—it’s a fascinating subject. One of the worst misconceptions people have about astrology is that it proposes that the planets and/or their movements actu- ally cause things to happen. This is not true. Let's say, for example, an astrologer observes a planetary pattern that is, among other things, associated with war. Let us suppose that, indeed, such a catastrophe occurs. Does the astrologer believe the planets were responsible for the war? No. The principle of cause and effect
