May Allaah extol prayers and salutations upon our Prophet Muhammad, all of his companions and followers until the Day of Judgement. I bear witness that there is no deity worthy of worship except Allaah, alone without any partner, and I bear witness that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger, to proceed... I thank Allaah, the Sublime and Exalted for guiding me to the way of the Salaf, facilitating for me the paths for seeking knowledge of the religion, and endowing me with a great love for the sunnah and its sciences. In your hands lies a translation of the treatise originally entitled in Arabic: “Tahreemul-Khidaab bis-Sawaad” [The Impermissibility of Dying One’s Hair Black] authored by one of the most respected scholars of our time, the reviver of the salafee ‘ciqeedah and pure sunnah, the destroyer of innovations in the land of Yemen, Aboo ‘Abdir-Rahmaan Muqbil Ibn Haadee al-Waadi’ee, may Allaah have mercy upon him, be Pleased with him and allow him entrance into Paradise by His Virtue and Mercy, acumen. ■ Reasons behind the translation of this treatise: a. I did not find a book published separately on this subject in English which deals with it from the angle of the principles of the science of hadeeth. 4 b. The importance of this subject and the Muslim’s need of being familiar of its legislative ruling with the proofs. For surely there are many Muslim men and women -whether barbers, hair stylists, or others- who dye their own and other persons hair black while ignorant or heedless of its impermissibility and the severe threat with which the Prophet (mz) threatened those who do so. c. The clarification of the weakness of some ahaadeeth which have become widespread amongst the Muslims which state the permissibility, rather the high recommendation of dying one’s hair and beard black. And this - dear reader - is the custom of fabricated and weak ahaadeeth. They clash and contradict with the authentic ahaadeeth and cause the slaves of Allaah to fall into all types of false beliefs, innovated acts of worship, and unlawful, bogus practices, thinking that they are from the authentic sunnah of our Prophet Muhammad (*#>) and Allaah is He from whom we seek aid. d. I wished to have a portion of the care taking of the rich inheritance of this great scholar of the sunnah, shaykh Muqbil Ibn Haadee al-Waadi’ee rahimahullaah. e. I wished to imitate the ‘ulamaa of hadeeth in their service of the sunnah in order that I maybe gathered in their circle on the Day of Judgement. * My work in this translation: 1). As for the prophetic ahaadeeth that the author mentioned, then I have made reference to the volume and page number in the translated copy along with the name of the book and chapter of those books of hadeeth that are available in English, such as Saheehul-Bukhaaree, Saheeh Muslim, Sunan Aboo Daawood, and Ibn Maajah enabling those readers who would like to quote the ahaadeeth from its original source to do so. 3). In some places in the treatise I have placed headings [always between two margins] and numbers giving the translation an easier style, along with additional brief commentary in the footnotes extracting further benefits even if they be outside of the subject of the treatise. 4). I have added an appendix including fataawaa of the major people of knowledge of this era further clarifying this matter along with other important benefits. 5). I have included a glossary of all Islamic and Arabic terms mentioned in the treatise, especially those pertaining to the science of hadeeth. ■ For my translation of the treatise I have depended upon the following prints: 1) .
