McDevitt Introduction ThepurposeofthisreportistoidentifythedescendantsofMichaelHoranandMaryMinnock WhilefewHoransliveintheoriginalsettlementlocations,therearestillmanypeoplefromthe surroundingareasofCaledon,andSimcoeCounty,OntariowhohaveHoranblood.Thoughheavily weightowardinformationontheAlbionTownshipHorans,(thedescendantsofWilliamHoranand HonorahShore),I'mincludingmoreontheotherbranchesasinformationcomesin.Thatisthe descendantsoftheHoransthatmovedtoGreyCounty,OntarioandfromtheretoMichiganand WisconsinandMontana.IalsohavesomeinformationontheHoransthatmovedtoWesternCanada. ThisreportwasdoneusingFamilyTreeMaker2012.TheGenealogicalsitesIusedthemost wereAncestry.ca,FamilySearch.comandAutomaticGenealogy.Whilegatheringinformationforthis reportIbecameawareoftheimportanceofgettingthisfamily'sstorywrittendownwhiletherewere stillpeoplearoundwhohadaconnectionwiththepast. Inthecourseofresearching,Ibecameawareofsomedifferencesintheoriginalsettlement stories.Iamincludingthesealternateversionsofeventsinthisreport,thoughImaybepersonally skepticalofthevalidityofsomeofthefactspresented. Allfamilieshavemyths.Ifeelthedates presentedintheLandPetitionsofMaryMinnockandthebaptismsintheCountyOffaly,Ireland, RahanParishregistersspeakforthemselves.ThoughnotaprofessionalGenealogist,Ihavethe obligationtonotmisleadotherresearchers.Ihaveingoodconsciencepresentedthefactsaswrittenin theoriginalrecords.AnythingthatIconsideredhearsayorunconfirmedImadeanefforttohaveit indicatedassuch.TheLandPetitionsandSettlementStoriessectionsareinterestingreads.I’veoffered commentaryonsomeofthestoriespresented. IhaveonlyincludedthefirstfourgenerationsfromMichaelHoraninthisreportforprivacy considerationsandbrevity.TherearelotsofHoran'sIdon'tknowaboutbecausemostrecordssave obituariesareclosedafter1921inCanada.IconsiderthisaworkinprogressandIamopentoanybody pointingoutanyerrorsoromissions.Itsonlythroughthecooperationandinputofothersthatwecan achieveamorecompletepictureoftheHoranfamilyDiasporasinceleavingIreland191yearsago. OnemajorupdateisthatI'vehadmyDNAtestedthroughacompanycalled23andMewhich uncoveredthreeWilliamHorandescendantslivingintheUS,twoinCanada,aswelladescendantof AnnHoranwifeofMichaelTrainor. ThislastonedispellsthemythoftheHoranfamilybeingin Canadaby1797asthereisaexistingbaptismalrecordforAnnHoranfromOffalydated1813.Parents namedMickHoran,MaryMinnick.DNAtestingalsoconfirmsalinkbetweenKearnHoran and MichaelHoran. Lastly,IdedicatethisimperfectworktoMaryMinnock;familymatriarch,thewomanwhotook herfamilyintothewildsofUpperCanada,andcarvedoutanewlifefromthewilderness. Alittlelaterheboughtalumberwagon;meantimehisgrainwascarriedtothemillontheoxen's backs.(52) Thehardestyearsoverandthefamilysuitablesettled,Williamturnedhisattentiontofoundinga familyofhisown.HemarriedaProtestantmaiden,Honorah,(56)daughterofHenryShore(57)of CountyKilkenny,andnieceoftheOrangemanwhowasfinedfiveshillingsforbeatingupJohn Collins,hisCatholicneighbour.WilliamandHonorahraisedfifteenchildren.(58) HadsomeoftheoffspringoftheprolificHoransnotmovedtootherparts,inagenerationortwothe familydoubtlesswouldhavepeopledandownedthetownship.ItwastheresourcefulWilliamwho usedaboiledpotatotosoftenhisbeardandfacilitatehisSundaymorningshavewiththerazorhe broughtfromIreland. Surroundedbychildren,grandchildrenandgreat-grandchildren,keepingopenhouseforevery wayfarer,andknowntothecountry-sideas"Pappy",WilliamHoran,goodsonoftheChurchthat hewas,livedtobe102.Genial,free-handed,hospitable,witty,loyalandcourageous,his descendants"tookafterhim".(52) Theywereeverreadyforafightorafrolicamongthemselves;butitwassaidthat"ifyoufightone Horanyouwillhavetofight'emall".Ateverygathering,whetherdance,wake,weddingorbee, therewassuretobeacollectionofHorans.TheirIrishhumourandimaginationexpresseditselfin tallstories,andtherearemorewild,weirdtalesofwildcats,wolvesandbearsafloatinAlbionthan inalltherestofthecounty.SuchtheHoranswereandsuchtheyaretothisday,afriendly, whimsicalanddelightfulfolk.
