Anyone interested in any of the components of this vast subject area is part of our intended audience, not only the student, but also the scientist interested in the history of his own field (or faced with the neces sity of writing an "historical introduction") and the historian, amateur or professional. The latter will not find the bibliogra phies "exhaustive," although in some fields he may find them the only existing bibliographies. He will in any case not find one of those endless lists in which the important is lumped with the trivial, but rather a "critical" bibliography, largely annotated, and indexed to lead the reader quickly to the most important (or only existing) literature. Inasmuch as everyone treasures bibliographies it is sur prising how few there are in this field. Justly treasured are George Sarton's Guide to the History of Science (Waltham, Mass., 1952; 316 pp.), Eugene S. Ferguson's Bibliography of the History of Technology (Cambridge, Mass., 1968; 347 pp.), Fran~ois Russo's Histoire des Sciences et des Techniques, Bibliographie (Paris, 2nd ed., 1969; 214 pp.), and Magda Witrow's ISIS Cumulative Bibliography. A bibliography of the history of science (London, 1971-; 2131 pp. as of 1976). But all are limited, even the latter, by the virtual impos sibility of doing justice to any particular field in a bibliography of limited size and almost unlimited subject matter. For various reasons, mostly bad, the average scholar prefers adding to the literature, rather than sorting it out. The editors are indebted to the scholars represented in this series for their willingness to expend the time and effort required to pur sue the latter objective. Our aim has been to establish a general framework which will give some uniformity to the series, but otherwise to leave the format and contents to the author/ compiler. We have urged that introductions be used for essays on "the state of the field," and that selectivity be exercised to limit the length of each volume to the economically practical. Since the historical literature ranges from very large (e.g., medicine) to very small (chemical technology), some bibliogra phies will be limited to the most important writings while others will include modest "contributions" and even primary sources. The problem is to give useful guidance into a particular field-or subfield-and its solution is largely left to the author/compiler. In general, topical volumes (e.g., chemistry) will deal with the subject since about 1700, leaving earlier literature to the area of chronological volumes (e.g., medieval science); but here, too, the volumes will vary according to the judgment of the author. The topics are international, with a few exceptions, but the litera ture covered depends, of course, on the linguistic equipment of the author and his access to "exotic" literatures.
